Keys Drop Ugly Opener to P-Nats

In the opening game of the Keys' six-game homestand, Frederick surrendered six runs in the eighth, walked 11 batters, and committed two errors as they fell to Potomac, 9-5. Each of the five Keys pitchers that entered Wednesday's game walked at least one batter. In the losing effort, 3B Dale Mollenhauer belted his sixth home run of the year while SS Manny Machado drove in two runs.

Frederick plated the first four runs in Wednesday's game. RF Steve Bumbry doubled off RHP Paul Demny to leadoff the bottom of the first inning. Manny Machado brought Bumbry home on a sac fly later in the inning. Dale Mollenhauer put the Keys up by two runs in the second when he belted a solo home run to right field. CF Miguel Abreu hit a RBI triple in the fourth which scored LF Kipp Schutz. Abreu scored on a Jonathan Schoop infield single as Frederick led 4-0 after four innings.

Potomac chipped away at their deficit in the top of the fifth inning when they plated three runs in the frame. The P-Nats scored three runs on four hits and two errors in the inning.

Nick Haughian exited his start after he registered two outs in the fifth. Over his 4 2/3 innings of work, he allowed three runs on five hits while walking three and striking out one.

The Keys remained in front by a run until the eighth inning. The Nationals batted around in the eighth and faced three different pitchers. LHP Chris Petrini got the first two outs of the inning but left the game with the bases loaded. Closer Sean Gleason entered for Petrini and walked 2B Jeff Kobernus which allowed RF J.R. Higley to score from third and tie the game. DH Destin Hood then came to the plate and chopped an infield single over Gleason's head. CF Eury Perez scored on the play and Potomac took their first lead of the game. 3B Justin Bloxom came up with the big hit of the inning as he cleared the bases with a double to left field.

In all, the P-Nats plated six runs on five hits in the eighth to put Wednesday's game out of reach for the Keys.

Chris Petrini picked up the loss and fell to 1-1 on the year while Paul Demny improved to 6-7.

Frederick will look to turn things around in game two of the series on Thursday night. RHP Bobby Bundy (8-5, 2.95) will take the hill for the Keys while Potomac will turn to RHP Cameron Selik (2-6, 4.15). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Harry Grove Stadium.

Thursday night is Fort Detrick Night at Harry Grove Stadium. The Keys will wear Patriotic Red, White, and Blue hats on the night which will be raffled off throughout the evening.
