Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Kinston, NC - LHP Drew Pomeranz went seven innings for just the second time all season Wednesday night, holding the Hillcats scoreless while he was on the mound. L.V Ware homered in the eighth for Lynchburg but is wasn't enough as they fell 3-1.
Kinston struck first in the bottom of the second inning. With runners at second and third and one away, the Hillcats elected to intentionally walk Roberto Perez to get to nine hitter Argenis Martinez. Martinez, in his first game since being called up from Low-A Lake County, worked a nine-pitch walk to bring in the first run of the game. A strikeout and a fielder's choice ended the inning and no further runs would score.
The Indians extended their lead in the fourth inning. Abner Abreu tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a Doug Pickens single. Kinston led 2-0.
LHP Drew Pomeranz allowed just three hits on the night and all three came in the first two innings. After Shawn McGill singled for Lynchburg with nobody out in the second inning, Pomeranz went on to retire the next 10 in a row and 18 of the next 20, walking two.
The Hillcats failed to score until the eighth inning after Pomeranz had left the game. RHP Rob Bryson gave up a two-out solo home run L.V. Ware which cut the Kinston lead to 2-1.
Abner Abreu answered Ware's long ball with one of his own in the bottom of the eighth inning putting the Indians up 3-1 heading into the ninth.
RHP Preston Guilmet entered the game for Bryson in the ninth. Guilmet retired the 'Cats in order to record his 21st save of the season.
Pomeranz (3-2) earned the win after tossing seven scoreless and striking out seven. RHP Aaron Shafer (2-2) took the loss for the Hillcats. He tossed five innings allowing two earned runs on five hits, walking three and striking out six.
The Hillcats fell to 5-8 in the second half, while the Indians improved to 9-4.
The two teams meet again tomorrow night at 6:30 pm. LHP Chris Masters (5-3) will start for the Hillcats against RHP Brett Brach (5-5) for the Indians. Listen live to all the action starting with the Hillcats On-Deck Show, powered by Honda/Suzuki of Lynchburg, at 6:10 pm on 105.5 KD Country and online at lynchburg-hillcats.com.
