Indians Ride Pomeranz to 3-1 Victory
July 6, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Kinston Indians News Release
Drew Pomeranz dazzled and Kinston had just enough pop to take down Lynchburg 3-1 Wednesday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. Kinston (9-4, 47-35) stays in first place on top of the Carolina League Southern Division, with the league's best record.
Cleveland's 2010 first round draft pick Pomeranz gave up singles to three of the first five batters he faced in the game, then cruised from there. Pomeranz dominated, retiring the next ten batters he faced. Pomeranz would only allow only two more base runners, both on walks in the fifth and seventh innings. He (3-2) matched a season high by going seven innings, giving up three hits while striking out seven. His Carolina League leading ERA dropped to 1.87.
Lynchburg starter Aaron Shafer ran into trouble in the second inning. Adam Abraham started the inning for Kinston with a walk. After a strike out, Doug Pickens singled. On the hit, Abraham hustled to third base and Pickens went to second on the throw. After an intentional walk to Roberto Perez loaded the bases, new K-Triber Argenis Martinez walked to drive home Abraham. In the fourth inning, Kinston started the bottom of the inning with a triple from Abner Abreu. Pickens would then come up big again with an RBI single, giving the Indians a 2-0 lead. The K-Tribe would secure the victory with a solo home run from Abreu in the bottom of the eighth inning. It was the fifth home run of the season for Abreu.
Preston Guilmet would pitch a perfect ninth inning for his 21st save in 22 tries this season. He struck out two.
The K-Tribe continues the homestand with a Thirsty Thursday, starting at 6:30 pm in Kinston. Brett Brach (5-5, 2.80) gets the start for Kinston. Don't miss Kinston's Friday night home game, where the first 500 fans will get a Jim Thome bobblehead.
