Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
RHP Justin Grimm (1-0, 1.50) at RHP Willie Kempf (3-3, 7.36)
RETURNING TO THE SCENE OF THE CRIME: The Pelicans come to Lynchburg for the second time this season and look to continue the succes they've had at City Stadium. The Birds capped their first road trip of 2011 with a drubbing of the Hillcats. In Lynchburg's home opener on April 15, The Pelicans rode a four-run ninth to a 7-2 victory. On April 16, the Birds led 4-3 in the ninth before breaking it open with a seven-run ninth to win 11-4. Myrtle Beach completed the sweep on April 17 with an 8-2 win, rolling through the three-game set by a combined score of 26-8.
CAN'T GET FOOLED AGAIN: The Pelicans come to the Hill City looking for revenge. The Hillcats became the only team to win a series at BB&T Coastal Field as they took two out of three from the Birds May 13-15. Although the Pelicans are coming off a tough series in Frederick where they lost three out of four, Myrtle Beach has not lost consecutive series in 2011. Their overall series mark is 9-5-2.
NOT THE SAME OLD HILLCATS': The Lynchburg Hillcats are looking like a different team than the one the Pelicans rocked in April. The 'Cats have won nine of their last 12, although seven of the wins were against cellar-dwellers Potomac and Winston-Salem. Still, Lynchburg is playing better ball since a ten-game losing streak in April. After an Opening Day win, the 'Cats dropped ten straight, but since then have gone 22-19.
YOU'VE GOT TO BE KEY-DING ME: Joe Wieland has been dominating the Carolina League, but has struggled against the Frederick Keys. For the second straight start against Frederick, Wieland gave up five runs in six innings. He was peppered for 11 hits last night, the most allowed by a Birds starter this year. In his first start against them, he allowed one run in five innings in a loss. The Keys have scored 11 runs in 17 innings overall against the star right-hander (5.82 ERA). The other six teams in the league have only combined to score four runs in 48 innings (0.75).
