Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Andy Wilkins and Jake Oester connected on successive doubles in the fifth inning, snapping a 1-1 tie and propelling Winston-Salem to a 3-1 win against Kinston in front of a sell-out crowd of 6,934 on Friday night at BB&T Ballpark. The Dash have now beaten the Indians in 23 of the last 25 games in the Twin City, and won their fourth game of the last five at home.
Kinston (27-26) put the first two runners aboard in the third and fourth innings, but could not score against starter Justin Collop.
In the fourth, Tyler Saladino led off with an infield single. The Dash shortstop then stole second and third base, before scoring on Jose Martinez's groundout to third.
The Indians responded in the next inning. For the third straight frame, the K-Tribe put the first two men aboard, this time against reliever J.R. Ballinger. Tyler Cannon singled and moved to third on Doug Picken's second double of the game. Pickens was then retired on a fielder's choice off the bat of Delvi Cid to put runners at the corners with one out. Tyler Hold grounded out to short, scoring Cannon and tying the game at one.
The tie was short-lived, as the Dash (25-29) moved ahead for good in the fifth. Andy Wilkins led off the inning with a double against Kinston starter T.J. House, and Jake Oester followed suit to put Winston up 2-1. After Nick Ciolli flew out, Jason Bour hit a towering pop fly that fell in between the second baseman Cannon and right fielder Abner Abreu, scoring Oester. The Dash went up 3-1, and that would hold as the final score.
Winston-Salem got a superb performance from the bullpen in tonight's game. Collop made a spot start and went three scoreless innings before giving way to J.R. Ballinger. In his second appearance with the Dash and first since his most recent promotion, Ballinger (2-0) gave up one run over three frames and earned his second win in as many appearances. Addison Reed struck out four in two innings, bridging the game to Taylor Thompson, who picked up his team-leading fourth save. House (2-6) got the loss after giving up three runs in 7.1 innings.
