Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Lynchburg, VA- The Hillcats received a solid outing from their pitching staff against Myrtle Beach on Friday night. However, their offense couldn't capitalize on several opportunities, and Lynchburg fell 4-1.
Just like Salem did the night before against the Hillcats, the Pelicans jumped out in front with a two-run inning. In the top of the fourth, Ryan Strausborger led off with a double, and Michael Olt followed with a single to drive in the first run. Olt later scored off of a sacrifice fly by Santiago Chirino.
The Hillcats cut into the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Todd Cunningham walked with one out. Two batters later, Phil Gosselin singled, moving Cunningham to third. Adam Milligan followed with a bloop single to left to score Gosselin to make the score 2-1. Pelicans starter Justin Grimm hit the next batter, Joey Terdoslavich, to load the bases, but Barrett Kleinknecht grounded out to end the inning.
The very next inning, Myrtle Beach got the run back. With Vinny DiFazio on second and two outs, Santiago Chirino hit a soft line drive that dropped in front of right fielder Keenan Wiley to score DiFazio and extend the lead to 3-1.
After giving up the RBI single, Lynchburg starter Willie Kempf left the game and Jeremy Haynes came in. Haynes allowed a double to the first batter he faced, then struck out Jared Hoying to end the inning. Haynes went on to strike out the next four batters he faced.
There was a scary moment in the top of the ninth inning. Leury Garcia hit a long fly ball down the left field line. Hillcats left fielder LV Ware gave chase, and in a last-ditch effort to make the catch, crashed into the wall. Ware fell to the ground, not moving, as the ball rolled away. Garcia sped around the bases, as no fielder could get to the ball, for an inside-the-park home run to make it 4-1.
The training staff and some of the players sprinted out to Ware in left. After about a minute, Ware started to move, got to his feet and began walking back and forth. After assuring the staff that he was ok, he stayed in the game. Ware said after the game, that the impact knocked the wind out of him.
Ryan Kelly came into the game in the ninth and retired the Hillcats in order to record his eighth save. Grimm (2-0) got the win in his second start for Myrtle Beach. Kempf (3-4) took the loss for Lynchburg.
The Hillcats and Pelicans will continue their weekend series Saturday night. It's a fireworks night at City Stadium, and there will be a Braves logo baseball giveaway to the first thousand fans through the gates. Lefty Chris Masters (3-2) will start for the Hillcats, and he will face righty Barret Loux (4-3) for Myrtle Beach. First pitch is at 6:05 pm, and the gates will open at 5.
If you can't make it to the game, the Hillcats On-Deck Show presented by Honda/Suzuki of Lynchburg will go on the air at 5:40 pm. Tune in to 105.5 KD Country or go to lynchburg-hillcats.com to listen live to all the action.
