Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT...: Myrtle Beach was able to salvage the final game of their four-game set in Salem and avoid a sweep with a 4-1 win on Sunday. Robbie Ross was terrific in six innings, allowing one run on four hits, all singles. The lefty walked two and struck out a season-high six as he improved his record to 4-1. Jared Hoying, batting in the leadoff spot for the first time this season, notched three hits and plated a pair of runs. Chris McGuiness continued to swing the bat well after coming back from injury, as he knocked an RBI double and scored a run. Mike Olt and Zach Zaneski both drove in a run as well. Zach Osborne worked two hitless innings of relief to set up for Johan Yan, who pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save. Ross becomes the first pitcher in the league to reach four wins in 2011.

PILING UP THE HARDWARE: Another week, another award for a Myrtle Beach Pelican. Tonight's starter Joe Wieland was named Carolina League Pitcher of the Week on Monday after his dominant start on May 4 in Potomac. The right-hander tossed six shutout innings and struck out 13 in a 3-0 victory. Wieland hit Eury Perez to start the game, then set down 13 in a row, nine on strikes, to take a no-hitter into the fifth. With one out in that inning, J.P. Ramirez hit a pop-up in front of the plate that fell between Wieland and catcher Vinny DiFazio, resulting in a bizarre double for Potomac's first hit of the game. Wieland (2-2) gave up another infield single in the bottom of the sixth, but picked up two more strikeouts as he finished his night with 13 without walking a batter. The 13 strikeouts were one shy of both a career-high and the Pelicans record. Joe had whiffed 14 on August 3 of last season against Visalia while pitching for Bakersfield. Myrtle Beach has had two 14-strikeout games, one by Kyle Davies on June 12, 2004 in Kinston with the other from Julio Teheran in Frederick last May 31. Joe is the fourth Pelican and the second Birds' pitcher to win the weekly award. Robbie Erlin won Pitcher of the Week last Monday, the same day Ryan Strausborger took home Player of the Week. Mike Olt won the first Player of the Week on April 18.

WELCOME BACK, MAC: Coming off of Saturday night's impressive return, Pelicans first baseman Chris McGuiness had another good game in Sunday's series finale against Salem. Batting in the five spot in the lineup for the first time in 2011, Chris went 1-for-4 with a double. He both knocked in and scored a run in the Pelicans' three-run fifth that put the game away. With a walk in his first plate appearance, the Charleston native extended his consecutive on-base streak to 13 games. It is the longest active streak in the Carolina League and is tied for the fifth-longest stretch in the league this season. In his first game back, McGuiness set a new high for a Pelicans player by reaching base in his 12th straight game with his seventh-inning homer off reliever Tom Ebert, his first of the season which cut Salem's lead to 3-2. McGuiness went on the disabled list with a strained oblique on April 27 and hadn't seen action until Saturday. The Pelicans were 12-5 with the Charleston native in the lineup to start the season and went 5-6 in his eleven-game absence.
