Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
TODAY'S GAME AT A GLANCE: The Pelicans square off with division rival Kinston in game one of a three-game series at BB&T Coastal Field. The Pelicans are 7-6 against the K-Tribe this season. Kinston is currently 3.5 games back of the Pelicans with 29 games remaining in the second half. The Pelicans are 15 wins shy of tying the franchise wins record of 88 set back in 2000.
Last night, the Pelicans completed a four-game sweep of the Lynchburg Hillcats with a 5-2 win. Ernesto Mejia lined a triple to the right field corner in the eighth to score the go-ahead runs. Tyler Wilson pitched four innings of relief to earn his second win of the season.
TODAY'S PITCHERS: In a matchup of left-handers, Tom Glavine will make a rehab-start for the Pelicans, while Nottingham vies for his second win of the season. Right-hander Michael Broadway will enter for the Pelicans following Glavine's departure.
Glavine: Expected to pitch three innings or 45-pitches, whichever comes first. Glavine has been on the disabled list since June 11th, recovering from a partially torn flexor tendon in his pitching elbow. In 2008, Glavine has made 12 starts for the Atlanta Braves. He is 2-3 with a 4.85 ERA. In 59.1 innings, he has allowed 60 hits and 32 earned runs. After being drafted in the 2nd round of the â84 Amateur draft, Glavine made his debut in Atlanta in 1987. He is a 10-time NL all-star and two-time Cy Young Award winner (1991, 1997). Glavine is also a five-time 20-game winner. He is one of just 23 pitchers to win 300-games in his career.
The 42-year old Concord, MA native spent five seasons with the New York Mets (â03-'07), before resigning with the Braves in 2008.
Nottingham: Making his ninth start for the K-Tribe since coming down from Double-A Akron, where he made 19 appearances out of the bullpen. In 37.0 total innings (4.625 per), he has allowed 41 hits and 20 earned runs. Nottingham's last start was against the Pelicans on July 30th. He lasted only 3.1 innings, allowing 10 hits and 10 runs (9 ER). Right-handed batters have fared very well against him (.292), which bodes well for Myrtle Beach. Best start of the season came against the Frederick Keys (7/19) when he went 6.0 innings and allowed just three hits and one run.
Originally selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 13th round of the 2003, Nottingham joined the Indians organization in 2007. The Canton, Ohio native has been a starter for his entire career. Of his 124 career appearances, 87 of them have been in a starting role.
RECAP OF 2008 REHABBERS: Tom Glavine is the third Atlanta Braves pitcher to appear for the Pelicans. Mike Hampton made a rehab-start for the Birds on July 5th. He went five innings, allowing five hits and no runs against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Braves reliever Jeff Bennett made four one-inning rehab outings for the Pelicans. In total, he allowed three hits and no runs in a weeks span.
MEJIA APPROACHING DOUBLES MARK: Pelicans first baseman Ernesto Mejia is closing in on the single-season franchise doubles record. Mejia has now connected on a Carolina League best 38 two-baggers. Marcus Giles (1999) recorded 40 doubles in the Pelicans inaugural season, a record that has withstood nine years. Mejia is currently 2nd on the single-season doubles list.
COUNTDOWN TO ATTENDANCE RECORD: The Pelicans overall 10-year franchise attendance record is 234,019 (2000). The Pelicans are currently 53,805 fans shy of eclipsing the mark with 15 home games remaining. The Pelicans have seen large crowds this season including a franchise record crowd of 6,336 for the home opener. The 2008 California vs. Carolina League All-Star drew a 10-year ballpark record of 6,599 fans. Most recently, the Pelicans set a non-home opener attendance record of 6,019 fans on July 23rd.
