Bullpen Helps Hogs Win Series Opener

WILMINGTON, DE - Warthogs reliever Matt Zaleski wiggled out of a tight spot in the eighth inning and breezed thru the ninth in helping Winston-Salem to a 6-5 win over the Wilmington Blue Rocks in the series opener on Monday night at Frawley Stadium. Zaleski entered game with a two-run lead, but the Blue Rocks had runners on second and third with no outs in the eighth inning. He limited the damage to one run then retired the side in order in the ninth inning to collect his third save of the season.

Another bullpen mate, Michael Dubee (4-6) tossed 2 2/3 innings of relief while holding the Blue Rocks to one run on four hits with three strikeouts to earn the win. For the second consecutive night, C.J. Retherford registered two hits and three RBI while improving the Warthogs record to a Carolina League best 22-12 in one-run contests.

Winston-Salem snared the early lead when Paulo Orlando led of the game with a triple off Mario Santiago. Joe Persichina brought him home with a sac fly to center field. Without the benefit of a hit, Wilmington moved in front with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Warthogs starting pitcher Clevelan Santeliz walked the first four batters to knot the score. Jeff Bianchi added an RBI sac fly to put the Blue Rocks in front 2-1.

The Warthogs powered their way into the lead in the second inning when Freddie Thon hit a two-run home run. Winston-Salem would add two more runs in the third inning as Retherford lined a two-run single thru the left side of the infield to give the Warthogs a 5-2 lead.

Wilmington trimmed their deficit to one in the fifth inning as Derrick Robinson floated an RBI double down the left field line and Adrian Ortiz followed with a run-scoring single. Retherford knocked in his third run in the seventh inning on an RBI sac fly to give the Warthogs a 6-4 lead.

Santeliz only lasted 4 1/3 innings and allowed four runs on just three hits. He struck out four and walked six, but did not factor in the decision. Santiago (7-7) worked 5 1/3 innings for the Blue Rocks and surrendered five runs on nine hits to suffer the loss.

These two teams will square off in the second of this three-game series on Tuesday night at Frawley Stadium. Winston-Salem will send RHP Anthony Carter (4-2, 5.40) to the mound opposite Wilmington RHP Matt Knginyzky (7-7, 3.48). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
