6,599 Fans Turn Out For Tom Glavine's Rehab-Start

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans capitalized on the electric energy brought to the ballpark by future hall-of-famer Tom Glavine to rout the Kinston Indians 17-2 in game one of the series in front of a Pelicans record crowd of 6,599. The crowd also tied the ballpark record achieved back on June 24th when the Pelicans hosted the 2008 California vs. Carolina League All-Star Game. With 28 regular season games remaining, the Pelicans are now 47,206 fans shy of the 10-year attendance record of 234,020 set back in 2000.

Atlanta Braves pitcher Tom Glavine pitched four strong innings in a rehabilitation start. Glavine has been on the disabled list since June 11th, recovering from a partially torn flexor tendon in his throwing elbow. In four innings, he allowed three hits and one run.

For a second straight night, Eric Campbell came to the plate with two outs in the first and clobbered a home run over Land Shark Landing to give the Pelicans a 1-0 lead. Campbell has now homered 30 times in his Pelicans career, which is five shy of the career home run mark of 35 set by Isaiah "KK" Ka'aihue (2006-07).

The K-Tribe responded with a run against Glavine in the second. They loaded the bases on a hit-by-pitch and two singles. Then, Cirilo Cumberbatch drew a walk to force home Jared Goedert to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Pelicans tacked on a run in both the second and third innings. In the second, Jon Mark Owings delivered an RBI single to score Tyler Flowers. Then, in the third, Ernesto Mejia connected on a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Gorkys Hernandez to give the Birds a 3-1 lead.

In the fifth inning, Eric Campbell hit a two out double and Ernesto Mejia followed with a walk. Then, Tyler Flowers crushed a fastball over Landshark Landing to give the Pelicans a 6-1 lead.

The Pelicans plated two more runs in the sixth inning to take an 8-1 lead. Mejia hit his second sacrifice fly of the night again scoring Hernandez. Later in the inning, Travis Jones walked with the bases loaded to force home Willie Cabrera.

The flood gates opened wide in the eighth inning as the Pelicans plated a season-high nine runs. Every player that batted came into score in the frame. The outburst was highlighted by the second home run of the night for Tyler Flowers.

Jon Venters earned the win in 3.1 innings of relief following the start of Glavine. He allowed five hits and just one run.

The Pelicans play game two against the K-Tribe on Tuesday, August 5th at 7:05 p.m. RHP Brett Butts (3-3, 3.39) will make his first start of the season, while Kinston will send RHP Jeanmar Gomez (3-8, 5.37) to the mound.
