Myrtle Beach Pelicans (69-38, 24-13) vs. Lynchburg Hillcats (46-63, 17-22)

Thursday, July 31 -- 7:05 PM

BB&T Coastal Field -- Myrtle Beach, SC

Game #108, Home Game #51

TODAY'S GAME AT A GLANCE: Fresh off a two-to-one series win over division rival Kinston, the Pelicans open up a four-game series with the Lynchburg Hillcats. The Pelicans have a 2.5 game lead over the K-Tribe in the Southern Division, while the Hillcats are towards the bottom of the Northern Division, 5.5 games back of Potomac. The Pelicans and the Lynchburg Hillcats have matched each other win-for-win this season. Each club has won six of the twelve meetings.

Last night, the Pelicans put together one of their finest offensive outbursts of the season. The Birds plated 16 runs on 22 hits. Eight Pelicans recorded multi-hit games and five notched multi-RBI nights.

TODAY'S PITCHERS: Right-hander Jeff Lyman will make his seventh start of the season for the Pelicans against right-hander Jared Hughes for Lynchburg.

Lyman: Managed only 3.2 innings in his last start (7/26 vs. WSW). Lyman has not pitched through the fifth inning in each of his last three starts. Against the Warthogs, he allowed eight hits and six earned runs. He also walked a season-high five batters. Lyman has struggled at BB&T Coastal Field this season, where he has an 0-3 record and a 6.00 ERA. For comparison, on the road he is 2-2 with a 3.60 ERA. Made his first start of the season against the Hillcats (6/21) at Calvin Falwell Field. Pitched well in four innings, allowing only three hits and no runs.

Drafted out of Monte Vista (CA) High School in the second round of the 2005 (77) draft by the Braves, the 21-year old Lyman is attempting to get back on track after a rocky 2007. He is currently the second highest drafted Pelican, taken higher than every other bird except Eric Campbell who was selected with the 71st overall selection in 2004.

Hughes: Making his second start against the Pelicans and 21st overall. In his other start against the Birds, he earned the win in 5.0 innings back on April 21st. In 103.1 total innings, Hughes has given up 104 hits and 51 earned runs. He has a below average strikeout to walk ratio of 51:48. Hughes has given up three or more runs in each of his last five starts.

The Stanford, CT native was drafted in the fourth round of the 2006 draft by the Pirates. Last season for Hickory, he went 8-9 with a 4.64 ERA. Played collegiately at Long Beach, where he went 16-7 in two seasons.

WINNING DAY-BY-DAY: The Pelicans have a .500 or better record in games on every day of the week. The Pelicans have played their best on Friday and Saturday. The Birds are 12-4 on Friday and 12-5 on Saturday. The Pelicans are 9-5 in games on Thursday. Their worst record is on Sunday, where they have played .500 ball (8-8).

WINNING MONTH-BY-MONTH: The Pelicans have also been stellar on a month-to-month basis. The Birds started the season going 15-11 in the month of April. They followed that up with a 20-9 mark in May. The Birds continued their success in June with a 16-11 record. On the final day of July, the Birds are 17-9.

CAMPBELL TIES RBI MARK: Eric Campbell tied the career RBIs record with a run-batted-in against the Kinston Indians last night. Campbell has driven in 51 runs in just 57 games in 2008, and coupled with his 49 in 2007 he has 100 for his career with Myrtle Beach. The total equals that of Adam LaRoche, who posted 100 RBIs between 2001-2002. LaRoche was recently named to the Pelicans' 10th Anniversary Team.

COUNTDOWN TO ATTENDANCE RECORD: The Pelicans overall 10-year franchise attendance record is 234,019 (2000). The Pelicans are currently 66,491 fans shy of eclipsing the mark with 19 home games remaining.
