Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Salem, VA-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, saw Kinston bat around in the eighth Thursday night in a series-opening 7-2 victory on Lewis-Gale Medical Center Field at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium. Kinston (22-17) sent 10 batters to the plate in the decisive inning to break a two-all tie with Salem (15-23).
Salem squeezed into the tie in the home half of the seventh. Tim Torres doubled to left-center with one out against righty Jeanmar Gomez. After a ground ball from Cesar Quintero, Nick Moresi sliced a ball to left to score Torres and knot the game.
Kinston, though, attacked back immediately. The leadoff batter in the top of the eighth, Carlos Santana, seared a triple to center against newcomer Jordan Powell. After Beau Mills was intentionally walked, Jared Goedert singled deep into the hole at short to score Santana and push Mills to second.
With that, Sean Walker entered the game and uncorked a wild pitch before he struck Carlos Rivero out in his Salem return. After Walker intentionally walked Niuman Romero, Johnny Drennen blasted a two-run double to center to make the score 5-2. The next batter, Matt McBride, scorched a grounder off of Jhon Florentino at third to create an error that scored a pair and finalized the margin of victory.
Offensively, Salem got a three-hit night from Tim Torres and a pair of singles from active Carolina-League batting leader Mark Ori. On the mound, Erick Abreu went six innings and two-thirds to fall one out shy of his season-long outing. Abreu surrendered just two earned runs on six hits.
The Avs continue their homestand with a 7:07 start against Kinston Friday night. Righty Chad Wagler throws for Salem against Hector Rondon for Kinston.
