Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
KINSTON, NC - A five-run fourth inning doomed the Pelicans in game two, as they fell to the Kinston Indians, 7-2, at Historic Grainger Stadium in Kinston on Tuesday night.
The K-Tribe got on the board first against Pelicans' starter Carlos Rivas with a pair of runs in the third inning. Cirilo Cumberbatch sparked the rally with an infield-single chopped off the plate. A batter later, Carlos Santana rocketed a double to the alley in right-center field. The double scored Cumberbatch and Santana advanced to third as Gorkys Hernandez misplayed the carom for an error. Santana was then brought in by a single from Beau Mills for a 2-0 Kinston advantage.
Things got much worse for Rivas and the Pelicans in a five-run K-Tribe fourth inning. Rivas walked the lead-off man Niuman Romero and as Johnny Drennen laid down a bunt, Rivas threw wildly to first base to allow Drennen to reach and put runners at the corners with nobody out. Matt McBride and Lucas Montero contributed RBI-singles to make it a 4-0 ballgame before Mills delivered the big-blow, an opposite-field three-run home run to stretch the lead to 7-0.
Rivas (4-2) took the loss for the Pelicans permitting seven runs over four innings. It was the first start of the season for Rivas, appearing in Kyle Cofield's spot in the rotation. Cofield was placed on the disabled list with tendonitis in his pitching shoulder and is expected to miss at least this start.
Myrtle Beach finally got on the board in the seventh as Brandon Hicks busted out of an 0-for-15 slump with his 15th home run of the season, a towering shot to left field off of Jeff Harris. Harris (1-0), rehabbing from Triple-A Buffalo earned the win in relief of Sung Wei Tseng who made the start and departed an out short of becoming eligible for the win. Tseng shutout the Pelicans for 4 2/3 innings making a spot-start.
Back-to-back doubles from Concepcion Rodriguez and Jon Mark Owings led to a Hernandez sacrifice fly and the final run of the ballgame for Myrlte Beach off of reliever Matt Meyer in the ninth inning. Meyer recovered to close out the win for Kinston.
In the loss, Travis Jones had his 31-game on-base streak snapped in an 0-4 night. Jones streak was halted one game shy of tying the longest such streak in the Carolina League this season.
The series finale will be contested at Historic Grainger Stadium Wednesday night at 7 PM. The Pelicans will send RHP Michael Broadway (1-2, 3.34) to the mound against LHP Shawn Nottingham (1-1, 2.94) for Kinston.
