Myrtle Musings...
Close But No Victory Cigar...The assorted media had their stories written and were simply waiting on a final score last night when Myrtle Beach put a crimp in their plans, striking for five runs in the top of the ninth to force the game into extra innings before falling 6-5 in ten frames. The Pelicans had put just two runners into scoring position in the first eight innings before two walks and a single loaded the bases with no one out in the ninth. CF Jordan Schafer got Myrtle Beach on the board with a walk to force in a run, and SS Elvis Andrus then beat out a potential double play ball for an RBI fielder's choice to keep the game alive. That brought 3B Eric Campbell to the plate as the tying run, and he blasted a curveball from Eddy Baeza over the left-center field wall to even the score at 5-5. The rally went for naught however, as Potomac's Justin Maxwell hit the game-winning homer off Jake Stevens in the bottom of the 10th as Myrtle Beach finished its road trip 2-4.
Variety is the Spice of Life...Myrtle Beach starter Deunte Heath had a little bit of everything in his Carolina League debut last night, putting a number in every statistical category save for an intentional walk. Heath held the Nationals to three runs on five hits over five innings last night, surviving five walks while tying a career-high with six strikeouts. He also gave up a home run, hit a batter, threw a wild pitch and committed a balk but kept the Pelicans in the game by stranding six runners in scoring position in his five innings. Heath's debut followed Tommy Hanson's impressive introduction to the Carolina League, as he held Potomac to a run on five hits while striking out eight on Wednesday night.
All Good Things Must Come to an End...It was quite a ride for SS Elvis Andrus, but his career-high 14-game hitting streak came to an end last night as he finished 0-4. Andrus did reach base twice however, and collected an RBI and scored a run. He hit .350 (21-60) with five doubles and 12 RBI over his streak, and raised his batting average to .249 on the year (his highest mark since hitting .250 on May 1st). The 14-game streak represented the longest for a Pelicans hitter in 2007.
No, Good Things Must Continue...Such is the case for OF Roberto Alvarez, who picked up two more hits last night for his fourth consecutive multi-hit game and extended his hitting streak to a season-high nine games overall. Alvarez is hitting .457 (16-35) over this run, and has collected two hits in seven of those nine games. He carries a .274 batting average into tonight's game, his highest mark since he went 1-3 in his first game of the year April 19th at Kinston.
