Lynchburg, VA-The Salem Avalanche, Class A Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, batted around twice en route to a 20-hit, 12-run night at City Stadium Thursday night. Salem (5-8) swept homestanding Lynchburg (7-8) by virtue of a 12-3 trouncing.
The Avalanche trailed 2-1 after a third inning in which the Hillcats parlayed a double and triple into a pair of runs. In the fourth, though, Salem's Ryan Reed opened with a bunt single against Todd Redmond. The next three batters reached with hits, culminating with Cesar Quintero's three run single. After Jose Lopez sacrificed himself and Wladimir Sutil was hit, Osvaldo Fernando came to the plate with the bases loaded. He launched a threerun triple to right that game the Avs a 6-2 lead. Two batters later, Chris Johnson capped the scoring with an RBI single that finished Todd Redmond's night.
All told, 11 batters came to the plate in the frame. Salem tagged Lynchburg for five more in an eighth inning that began with three consecutive hits against reliever Derek Antelo including an RBI double from Billy Hart. Cesar Quintero followed that with an RBI groundout. After Jose Lopez doubled, Wladimir Sutil and Osvaldo Fernando provided RBI singles. Mitch Einertson ended the scoring with an RBI groundout.
Salem's 20 hits in the victory are a season high. Osvaldo Fernando's four hits tied his career best and his four RBI set a new personal professional mark. Ryan Reed's three hits matched the season high he set April ninth against Potomac while Orlando Rosales notched his third three-hit game in the past six. In addition, Wladimir Sutil's 3-for-5 pushed his multihit game streak to six while his overall hit string reached double digits.
The Avalanche, with the win, guaranteed a season series victory over Lynchburg. Salem has taken 11 of 13 overall from the Hillcats and has swept Lynchburg twice this year.
High-ho: The Avalanche pounded out a season-best 20 hits in yesterday's win against Lynchburg. That replaced the previous mark that the Avs set two days prior in game one of the series (18). Ryan Reed tied a season high with three hits-he previously achieved that on April 9th against Potomac, the third day of the season. In back-to-back games, Orlando Rosales has matched a season high with three hits in each.
Ten again: Salem infielder Wladimir Sutil went 3-for-5 yesterday evening to up his hit streak to ten. In that time, Sutil has hit .568 (21-37) with a double and eight runs batted in.
