KINSTON, NC - Sloppy defense and a stagnant offense allowed Winston-Salem to hand Kinston starting pitcher Ryan Edell a win for his birthday, as the Indians defeated the Warthogs 3-2 on Friday night at Grainger Stadium. Edell (9-3), who was celebrating his 24th birthday, picked up the win after holding Winston-Salem to two runs on five hits in seven innings of work. The Warthogs, who lead the Carolina League with 121 errors, made costly defense mistakes in dropping game one of this three-game series.

Kinston took advantage of a Warthogs error in the first inning to take an early lead. With a runner on first base and two outs, Winston-Salem starting pitcher Clayton Richard had Stephen Head picked off first base, but Micah Schnurstein dropped the pickoff throw, which allowed Head to move to third base. Max Ramirez followed with an infield single to plate the runner to give Kinston a 1-0 lead. The Indians and Ramirez struck again in the third inning as the Kinston catcher lined a two-out RBI single up the middle to score Jose Constanza.

The Warthogs finally got on the board in the fourth inning when back-to-back singles by Robert Valido and Robbie Hudson put runners on the corners with no outs. Schnurstein followed by hitting into a double play, but Valido scored from third to cut the Warthogs deficit to 2-1. Winston-Salem tied the game in the seventh when Javier Castillo lifted an RBI sacrifice fly to right field with the bases loaded and one out to score Schnurstein.

Another Warthogs error allowed Kinston to score the go-ahead run in the seventh inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, Jared Head hit a ground ball to Valido, but instead of starting the double play, the Warthogs shortstop tried to tag the runner at second. The ball popped out of his glove allowing Constanza to score and the bases loaded with nobody out. Warthog's reliever John Lujan was able to get out of the jam without allowing further damage, but Kinston ended the inning with a 3-2 lead.

Scott Roehl picked up his 13th save of the season by striking out the side in the ninth. He is a perfect 5-for-5 in save opportunities against Winston-Salem this season. Richard (5-6) took the hard luck loss after allowing two earned runs in six innings of work. Hudson finished 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.

These same two teams will square off in game two of this three-game set on Saturday, July 7 at Grainger Stadium. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 PM with Winston-Salem sending RHP Kyle McCulloch (7-6, 3.65) to the mound. Kinston will counter with RHP Kevin Dixon (6-3, 3.79).
