LAST TIME OUT: Taking a 4-2 lead into the eight inning, the Pelicans lost in shocking fashion on a walk-off wild pitch, 5-4, to the Winston-Salem Dash on Saturday night at BB&T Ballpark..The Pelicans scored all four of their runs in the first two innings off of White Sox prospect Spencer Adams...PIN-CHIEH CHEN and MARK ZAGUNIS connected on a back-to-back RBI doubles in the first, and JACOB ROGERS added a third run in the first with an RBI single...JASON VOSLER provided the fourth run with an RBI hit in the second...DAURY TORREZ allowed two solo home runs and a pair of singles in his six innings...JOSH CONWAY surrendered the lead, allowing two runs in the eighth after a clean seventh...The Dash walked off in the ninth against MICHAEL HEESCH...The loss kept the Pelicans from capturing a three-game sweep of the Dash and put the Birds back in second place in the second half standings.
THE ONE DAY KING: The Pelicans run in first place in the second-half Southern Division standings lasted just one day, erased by last night's 5-4 walk-off loss to Winston-Salem. The Dash have been in first place for 56 days of the second half, falling into the second just once, when the Pelicans swept them in a doubleheader on Wednesday. Myrtle Beach has spent more time in first place in the current half standings than any other club, however. Myrtle Beach has had at least a share of first place 70 days this season (69 of those days coming in the first half), second place on 37 days, including today, third place just six, and last place only 11 days, all during this half.
BRING ON THE SOUTHPAWS: For the first time all year, the Pelicans will square off against three straight left-handed starters, facing a trio of southpaws in this series with Frederick. The Pelicans are 21-15 against LHSP (.583 wining percentage), while 52-34 against RHSP (.605). The last lefty the club faced was Andre Wheeler of Winston-Salem in game of a doubleheader on Wednesday, and the Birds won the game 4-2. The Pelicans have not faced John Means, who starts tomorrow in his Carolina League debut, but have squared off against both today's starter Luis Gonzalez and Sunday's hurler Mitch Horacek. Gonzalez has beaten the Pelicans twice in his two outings, while Horacek took a tough luck loss against the Birds on July 31, allowing just one earned run in six innings.
WILD, WILD, WALK-OFF: Last night's loss was a difficult pill to swallow for the Pelicans, but fortunately for them, it is a rare occurrence that the Birds lose on a wild pitch. Last season, the Pelicans lost just two games on walk-off wild pitches, most recently on August 15, 2014, against Salem. In that game, ABEL DE LOS SANTOS let lose a wild offering and infielder Carlos Asuaje scored the winning run in the bottom of the 11th. Before that, SAM STAFFORD allowed outfielder Terrance Gore to score the game winner in the last of the ninth in a game at Wilmington on April 26. Aside from those instances, you have to go back to May 7, 2010, in a game against Lynchburg for the last time the Birds lost on a wild pitch. In that contest, current Cincinnati Reds All-Star catcher Devin Mesoraco scored on a the game-winner on a wild pitch from former Chicago Cubs right-hander JAYE CHAPMAN. The last time a wild pitch walked off the Pelicans against last night's opponent, the Winston-Salem Dash, was July 25, 2009, when then-Braves farmhand CRAIG KIMBREL allowed Dash center fielder Justin Greene to plate the walk-off run in the bottom of the ninth.
BIRD FOOD: The Birds have won five straight series...The Pelicans have won 10 of their last 14 games and 16 of their last 22 games...Only Frederick has a winning record against the Pelicans (7-6)...After a quiet month in terms of transactions, the Pelicans made seven moves in the recent series at Winston-Salem...JONATHAN MARTINEZ was placed on the DL yesterday; he started game one of the doubleheader on Wednesday...After just two days on the 7-day disabled list, MARK ZAGUNIS returned yesterday (he was placed on the DL Tuesday, retroactive to August 7).
BEACH TO THE 'BIGS: Three weeks ago, 2013 Pelicans hurler JERAD EICKHOFF was part of an eight-player trade, heading to the Philadelphia Phillies in the blockbuster trade sending Cole Hamels to the Texas Rangers. Tonight, Eickhoff makes his major league debut with the Phils in Miami. The right-hander is the 11th former Pelican player to make The Show for the first time this season and the 136th past Pelican to make it up to the Bigs after playing on the Grand Strand. After 13 Pelicans earned their first call to the Big Leagues last year, 11 have made it this season. RHP KEONE KELA (with Pelicans in 2014, debuted with Rangers), UTIL ODUBEL HERRERA (2012-2014, Phillies), RHP WILFREDO BOSCAN (2011, Pirates), IF HANSER ALBERTO (2012-2014, Rangers), RHP CHI CHI GONZALEZ (2013-2014, Rangers), 3B JOEY GALLO (2014, Rangers), RHP ABEL DE LOS SANTOS (2014, Nationals), OF RYAN STRAUSBORGER (2011, Rangers), and RHP LUKE JACKSON (2012-2013, Rangers) have all made it up to the highest level this year.
PROSPECT 7-PACK: Six players on the Pelicans' roster are ranked in the Cubs Top 30 prospects according to MLBPipeline.com's Prospect Watch and six are in Baseball America's Top 30. RHPs PAUL BLACKBURN (NR by MLB.com/No. 18 Baseball America), JEREMY NULL (29/NR), DAURY TORREZ (28/30), JEN-HO TSENG (17/11), DUANE UNDERWOOD (5/10), catcher VICTOR CARATINI (23/13), and OF MARK ZAGUNIS (10/15). Baseball America also lauded a handful of Pelicans players with "Best Tools" labels. Caratini is the "Best Defensive Catcher" in the system according to the 2015 Prospect Handbook, CARLOS PENALVER as the "Best Defensive Infielder," Tseng has the "Best Control" and "Best Changeup," Underwood possesses the "Best Fastball," and Zagunis has "Best Strike Zone Discipline." Outfielders BILLY MCKINNEY (3/6), JACOB HANNEMANN (27/17, and BA's "Fastest Baserunner"), 3B JEIMER CANDELARIO (20/24), and JUAN PANIAGUA (top "Sleeper" prospect) were on the roster but have since been promoted. ANDREW ELY, named by BA as the "Best Defensive Player" from the Cubs 2014 draft class, was on the club's Opening Day roster but went down to South Bend. 2B DANIEL LOCKHART was at one point ranked #29 by MLB.com but is no longer.
