Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Jordan Guerrero fired eight innings of one-run ball, and Nick Basto clubbed a three-run homer to lead the Winston-Salem Dash to a 4-1 series-opening win over the Carolina Mudcats on Friday at BB&T Ballpark.
With their triumph, the Dash (33-20, 63-60) increased their lead to 3.5 games over the Mudcats for the final Southern Division playoff spot. With Myrtle Beach falling in Frederick, Winston-Salem also added to their divisional lead, which is now 1.5 games.
Guerrero (6-3) limited the Mudcats to just one run on four hits in his eight innings, his sixth start in a row of at least six innings with no more than two runs allowed. He walked just one while fanning four to earn his fourth straight victory.
Carolina (30-24, 64-59) led 1-0 in the fourth when Jake Peter walked against Muddies starter Blair Walters (5-7). After a Trey Michalczewski strikeout, Keon Barnum singled to put runners on first and second. Basto then drilled a three-run shot to left to put the Dash ahead 3-1. It marked the second time in Basto's career that he went deep in back-to-back games.
An inning later, Winston-Salem added to its lead. Eddy Alvarez doubled with one out and, two batters later, came around to score on Michalczewski's double.
Michael Ynoa yielded two singles to begin the ninth, but then fanned the next three to nail down his sixth save of the season. Winston-Salem has successfully converted 17 straight save chances.
The Mudcats drew first blood in the contest. Guerrero walked Jacob Schrader to begin the second. Schrader came all the way around to score from first on Joe Odom's opposite-field double, putting Carolina up 1-0.
However, Guerrero surrendered only two other baserunners from the second inning on, retiring 18 of the final 20 Mudcats he faced.
Winston-Salem sends Carson Fulmer (0-0, 2.77 ERA) to the mound Saturday against Carolina's Seth Webster (8-6, 2.52 ERA). Pregame radio coverage is available at 6:15 p.m., with the first pitch at 6:30 p.m. on wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn App.
