Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
FREDERICK, MD. (AUGUST 21, 2015) -- The The Texas Rangers announced on Friday that they have sent former Myrtle Beach Pelicans right-handed pitcher Jon Edwards to the San Diego Padres as the player to be named later in the trade that Texas made to acquire outfielder Will Venable on August 18. Edwards joins catcher Marcus Greene Jr. in the trade en route to San Diego. Edwards pitched with the Pelicans during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. The Padres have optioned Edwards to Triple-A El Paso. To make room for Edwards on the 40-man roster, San Diego designated left-handed pitcher Chris Rearick for assignment.
Edwards, 27, spent parts of two seasons with the Pelicans and pitched exclusively out of the bullpen. In his first stint with the Birds in 2012, Edwards made four relief appearances, tossing 5.0 innings and accumulating a 3.60 ERA before being promoted to Double-A Frisco in early September. He began the 2013 campaign with Myrtle Beach and went on to make 26 relief appearances and convert four saves along with an accumulated 3-1 record. In 40 1/3 innings that season, he struck out 51 batters, the second-most of any full-time Pelicans reliever.
This season with Triple-A Round Rock, Edwards leads the Pacific Coast League with 20 saves, one ahead of Triple-A Iowa's Brian Schlitter.
Originally signed by the St. Louis Cardinals as a fourteenth-round selection in the 2006 MLB June Amateur Draft as an outfielder out of Keller High School (TX), Edwards spent four seasons in the Cardinals' system before being released following the 2010 season.
In 2011, he played in for the San Angelo Colts of the North American Baseball League and the Alpine Cowboys of the Pecos League, both in independent circuits, before signing with the Rangers as a minor league free agent on December 20, 2011. From there he made the full-time transition to the mound prior to the 2012 season, his first campaign with the Rangers, and worked his way up to make his Major League debut with Texas on August 15, 2014.
Venable, 32, had spent his entire eight-year career with the Padres before debuting with Texas on August 20, where he went 0-for-2 with a walk against the Detroit Tigers. A left-handed hitting outfielder, he is a career .252 hitter with 81 homers, 304 RBI, and 130 stolen bases (31 caught stealing) in 919 games played.
The 2015 season marks the 17th season for the Pelicans franchise and first as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For information on tickets to see the Pelicans in 2015, please call (843) 918-6000, e-mail info@myrtlebeachpelicans.com, or visit www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
