It's Official: Phillies Call up Former Pelican Jerad Eickhoff to Majors
August 21, 2015 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
FREDERICK, MD. (AUGUST 21, 2015) -- The Philadelphia Phillies have recalled right-handed pitcher Jerad Eickhoff from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The former Pelicans starter, who pitched in Myrtle Beach during the 2013 season, was one of six players traded by the Texas Rangers to the Phillies in the deal headlined by three-time All-Star left-hander Cole Hamels. Eickhoff is expected to make his big league debut on Friday while in Miami against the Marlins. He is the eleventh former Pelicans player this year, and 24th in the last two seasons, to make the Major Leagues for the first time in his career. In the 17-year history of the Pelicans franchise, Eickhoff is the 136th player all-time to make the Show after playing on the Grand Strand.
Eickhoff, 25, spent the majority of the 2013 campaign with the Pelicans, going 7-3 in 21 games, all starts. He posted a 3.41 ERA, good for ninth in the Carolina League, and his 1.17 WHIP was third in the eight-team circuit. In 116.0 innings before his promotion to Double-A, the Evansville, Indiana, native struck out 80 hitters in the league while walking just 26. His 1.86 walks per nine innings was the second lowest rate in the circuit among qualifying starters, and he allowed the fourth-fewest baserunners per nine innings (11.09).
Known as a workhorse, Eickhoff pitched five or more innings in all but three of his starts at the Class A-Advanced level, lasting six or more frames 12 times, seven or more frames on six occasions, and eight innings twice. His 11-strikeout game on June 3, 2013, against the Potomac Nationals is the best single-game strikeout performance for a Pelicans pitcher since Luke Jackson fanned 12 Wilmington Blue Rocks in a home start on July 17, 2012.
For his career, the six-foot, four-inch right-hander has twice won his league's Pitcher of the Week award, first as a Rangers farmhand in the Texas League with Double-A Frisco for April 26-May 4, 2014, and again in the International League with the Phillies' Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs for the week of August 3-9, 2015.
Eickhoff made just two appearances this year with Frisco before getting bumped up to Triple-A Round Rock. With the Express, Eickhoff compiled a 9-4 record and a 4.25 ERA prior to the July 31 trade deadline. With three minor league teams this year, he is 12-5 with a 3.85 ERA, logging 133 1/3 innings of work. During that run, Eickhoff has struck out 126 opposing batters while walking just 39.
The Rangers selected Eickhoff in the 15th round of the 2011 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Olney Central College. He was previously selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 46th round in 2010 during his freshman year.
Eickhoff takes the rotation spot of David Buchanan, who was sent down to Triple-A on August 12. Eickhoff joins the Phillies roster that currently features former Pelican Odubel Herrera, who also made his Major League debut with Philadelphia this year.
Eickhoff is expected to take the ball for his Major League debut against the Marlins on Friday, and right-hander Kendry Flores is scheduled to start for Miami. First pitch from Marlins Park is slated for 7:10 p.m. ET.
Eickhoff is the eleventh former Pelicans player to make the big leagues for the first time this season. He joins Keone Kela (with Pelicans in 2014, debuted with Rangers), Herrera (2012-2014, Phillies), Wilfredo Boscan (2011, Pirates), Hanser Alberto (2012-2014, Rangers), Alex "Chi Chi" Gonzalez (2013-2014, Rangers), Joey Gallo (2014, Rangers), Michael Broadway (2008, Giants), Abel De Los Santos (2014, Nationals), Ryan Strausborger (2011, Rangers), and Luke Jackson (2012-2013, Rangers).
The 2015 season marks the 17th season for the Pelicans franchise and first as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For information on tickets to see the Pelicans in 2015, please call (843) 918-6000, e-mail info@myrtlebeachpelicans.com, or visit www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
