Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - In a game featuring two teams headed in opposite directions, the Winston-Salem Dash and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans battled for four scoreless innings at BB&T Coastal Field with J.J. Hoover and Nevin Griffith matching each other pitch for pitch with either hurler not giving an inch. But when things aren't going your way, as the Pelicans found out the hard way, a game can slip away from you in a hurry. A five-run seventh inning broke the game wide open and pushed the Dash to their ninth consecutive win and a four-game sweep at the hands of the Pelicans who have lost seven straight.
Hoover (0-1) deserved a much better fate in this ballgame than his final line would lead you to believe. In 6 2/3 frames, Hoover surrendered eight runs (seven earned) on ten hits, but had allowed just one unearned run to cross the plate through five innings. With a bullpen depleted from overuse during this series and their last three-game set with Salem, Hoover was counted on to get at least six or seven innings if possible no matter the situation in the game.
On the other hand, Dash right-hander Nevin Griffith tossed seven shutout innings, striking out five to earn his third win in as many starts.
On the offensive end for the Pelicans, shortstop Ryan Barba and outfielder Calvin Culver each tallied two-hit nights while Yoel Campusano came through with a two-run single with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to get the Pelicans on the board.
Fans were treated to something special when former Pelican third baseman Van Pope made his re-debut as a pitcher in the Carolina League. After his position switch, Pope had been working down in the instructional league before his callup to Myrtle Beach. Pope had a solid debut, tossing 1 1/3 innings while striking out one. The only blemish came on a fastball up in the zone that Dash centerfielder Justin Greene knocked into the Budweiser Thirst Inning Deck.
The Pelicans will try to get back on the winning track on Friday as the team travels to Kinston for a three-game road series against the Indians. After the series with Kinston, the team will enjoy an off-day before beginning their first two-series homestand of the year as the Pelicans welcome the Potomac Nationals and Frederick Keys to BB&T Coastal Field starting Tuesday.
