THE HILLCATS: Last night the Hillcats got swept in a doubleheader by the Red Sox in Salem, falling in game one 9-1 and in game two 5-3...Salem now leads the four-game series two games to one...Lynchburg is now 2-4 on their current stretch of 13 in a row on the road...Tonight is the final game of the four-game series at Salem and game seven of the longest set of consecutive road games in 2010...
VS. SALEM: The Hillcats are 2-4 against the Red Sox thus far this season after getting swept in the doubleheader last night...The Cats went 10-10 against the Sox in the 460 series last season and were 5-5 at Lewis Gale Field...In the post-season the Cats swept the Sox three games to none in the Mills Cup Championship...In the all-time series Salem leads 159-139 during the regular season, and they are 91-59 at home...
FAMILIAR FOES: The Hillcats are playing the same two teams over the course of the first 14 games of the season (Frederick and Salem)...
A BUMP ON THE ROAD: The Hillcats only managed four runs on six hits in the two games combined last night in the twin bill...Through the first six innings of game two they had just three hits over the course of 13 innings...Lynchburg's offense scored a season-high nine runs and smacked a season-best 17 hits in their win Monday night...In the first four games of this extended stretch on the road the Cats batted .348 (54-for-155), averaging six runs per game (24 runs in four games) with 18 extra-base hits...In Lynchburg's first seven games of the season at City Stadium they were were averaging just 2.4 run per game (17 runs in seven games) with 13 extra-base hits...
FIELDING WOES: This season the Hillcats have committed 21 errors in 13 games played, the most errors by a team in the Carolina League...Last night the Cats had six errors in the doubleheader, two in game one and four in game two (their most in a game this season)...Those six errors led to five unearned runs, including one in each of the first three innings in game two...Lynchburg's .956 fielding percentage is last in the Carolina League and they have had at least one error in ten straight games...
NEARLY NO-NO'D: In game one of the doubleheader last night the Hillcats only managed one hit off of the Red Sox...The only hit came from the first batter of the game...OF Josh Fellhauer hit a ground ball to the second baseman Oscar Tejeda and while he went for the ball shortstop Ryan Dent ran into him going for the ball as well...It was scored a hit and that was the only hit that Lynchburg had in the seven-inning contest...
PLUNKED: The Hillcats hurlers hit Salem batters with a pitch four times last night...Three of them were by game one starter RHP Curtis Partch...INF Jon Hee for the Red Sox was hit three times on the night...
SOX SLAYER: INF Jose Gualdron went 1-for-3 with an RBI in game two of the doubleheader last night...In four games against Salem this season he is 7-for-15 (.467) with three doubles, two RBI and three runs scored...All seven of his hits this season have been against the Red Sox...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Caleb Clay was selected by Boston in the supplemental first round of the 2006 draft straight out of high school in Alabama...He made his professional debut in 2007 with the Short Season Low-A Lowell Spinners and went 1-0 with a 2.14 ERA in five starts...He suffered an injury that season and had to have Tommy John surgery that kept him out for most of 2008...He did make two starts with the GCL Red Sox and he did not allow a run in two and 2/3 innings of work...Last season he pitched for full season Low-A Greenville and went 6-7 with a 4.01 ERA in 25 games (16 starts) for the Drive...This year he has progressed to Advanced-A and with Salem has gone 1-0 with a 4.00 ERA and one save thus far in two games (one start)...Tonight will be his first start against Lynchburg...
