Pelicans "Double" Up Keys, Devine Promoted to Mississippi

July 1, 2005 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC- "Double" was the word of the night at Coastal Federal Field on Friday evening. The Pelicans used smacked four doubles in one inning to help them double up the Frederick Keys, 6-3, and Myrtle Beach reliever Joey Devine, Atlanta's 1st round draft pick in the '05 draft, was promoted to Double-A Mississippi after the victory. The Pelicans evened up the three-game series against the Keys at one game apiece.

Last night it was Frederick that scored in bunches, tonight it was the Pelicans turn as they pieced together a big 3rd inning to stake claim to a sizable early lead. Myrtle Beach DH Michael Rozema led off with a double into deep right-centerfield. The next two batters were retired and just when it looked like Rozema would be stranded the Pelicans bats heated up. CF Steven Doetsch blasted a line drive into the right-centerfield gap good enough for a triple, scoring Rozema from second to put the Pelican on top 1-0. With Doetsch at third, 2B Martin Prado delivered an RBI double to give the Birds 2-0 edge. Prado would then come across the plate on an RBI double from LF Josh Burrus, giving the Pelican a 3-0 advantage. The hit parade continued as RF Matt Esquivel laced an RBI single to right, scoring the speedy Burrus from second, making the score 4-0. One batter later, yet another RBI double, this time off the lumber of 1B Mark Jurich brought in the 5th run of the inning to make the score 5-0.

Frederick got on the scoreboard in the top of the 4th when LF Josh McCurdy pounded a grounder just inside the third base line to bring in DH Branden Florence, who singled to start the inning. The RBI single from McCurdy cut the Pelicans lead to four runs, 5-1.

In the bottom of the 5th the Birds stretched the lead back to five runs. Prado led off with his second double of the night and came in to score when Burrus delivered his second run scoring hit of the night, a single to left, bringing the score to 6-1 in favor of the Pelicans.

The Keys scratched back into the game in the top of the 7th when they cut the Pelicans lead in half. Frederick used a run scoring double courtesy of C Ryan Hubele, his 6th RBI of the series, to nibble away at the lead, 6-2. The Keys chopped the lead in half, 6-3, when 3B Gera Alvarez bounced into a double play with the bases loaded, but that's as close as it would get. The Pelicans bullpen turned the Keys away in the last two innings and the Birds held on to win, 6-3.

Myrtle Beach starter Jake Stevens (W, 5-6) didn't need much run support with the way he pitched, but his teammates provided him with plenty of it. Stevens allowed seven scattered Frederick hits produce just one lone run through six strong innings, in which he struck out six and walked one. Reliever Dan Smith slung 1.1 perfect innings out of the pen, while Devine (S, 1) shut the door on the Keys with a perfect 9th. Minutes after logging the first save of his professional career the former N.C. State Wolfpack closer received word that he would be sent to Mississippi. In five innings out of the bullpen with the Pelicans, the Braves first rounder did not give up a hit, and struck out 7 of the 15 batters that he retired. He will join the M-Braves on Sunday in Pearl, MS. Frederick starter Fredy Deza (L, 2-4) was touched up for the loss, giving up all six Pelicans runs on all 10 hits in 4.2 innings of work.

For Myrtle Beach offensively Burrus extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a 2-4 night at the dish with two RBI. Prado and Jurich each went 2-4, while the newcomer, Rozema added a 2-3 effort to pace the Pelicans bats.
