Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE --- The Wilmington Blue Rocks losing streak ran to a season-high five games in a row, as they fell to the Lynchburg Hillcats, 3-2, at Frawley Stadium on Friday night. The Rocks entered the ninth inning trailing, 3-0, but fell short before a crowd of 2,833.
Jon Devries put the Blue Rocks on the board in the ninth with a two-out, two-run double off Todd Ozias to pull Wilmington to within one run, but Iggy Suarez popped out to shortstop to end the ball game.
Adam Boeve started the scoring with a two-run home run in the fourth inning off Wilmington starter Jose Vaquedano (3-3). Boeve's 12th homer went over the left centerfield fence and came on a 2-1 pitch. Taber Lee, who led off the inning with a double, scored in front of him.
Vaquedano pitched six solid innings, allowing just two runs on three hits while striking out six. After Boeve's home run, the 23-year old retired eight Hillcats in a row.
Lynchburg starter Brian Holliday (4-2) was effectively wild in holding the Blue Rocks to two hits over six innings. He walked five, but struck out four. In the sixth inning, Holliday worked out of a jam after walking Bryan Pritz and Brant Ust with one out.
After the runners moved up to second and third following a passed ball by catcher Mike McCuistion, Holliday coerced a ground ball from Jeff Ontiveros. Bryan Pritz, who left third on contact was cut down at the plate by third baseman Avelino Asprilla. Chad Spann then grounded out to third to end the inning.
The Hillcats tacked on what proved to be the winning run in the ninth on a two-out RBI double from Asprilla that scored Bobby Kingsbury. Kingsbury worked a two-out walk off Felix Romero and then stole second base.
Despite allowing two runs in the ninth, Ozias earned his third save of the season.
The Blue Rocks and Hillcats conclude their three-game series Saturday night with a 6:05 p.m. game. LHP Tommy Hottovy (3-9, 6.25) will face off against RHP Wardell Starling (5-5, 5.24). Fireworks, sponsored by AAA Mid-Atlantic, will follow the game. For tickets or more information, call (302) 888-BLUE or visit the official website of the Wilmington Blue Rocks, www.bluerocks.com.
Game Notes: Lynchburg catcher Mike McCuistion threw out both Blue Rocks that attempted steals off of him. He cut down Chad Spann in the second inning and Suarez in the third. The Blue Rocks are now 39-for-68 in steal attempts this season. The two-run ninth inning ended a stretch of 25 innings in which the Blue Rocks had scored just one run.
Prior to Scott White's single in the ninth inning with Zach Borowiak on base, Wilmington was 0-for-11 in the game with runners on base.
The five-game losing streak for Wilmington is the longest continuous losing streak of the year. The Rocks were swept in a four-game series by the Salem Avalanche from June 2-5, and then lost the make-up of a suspended game against the Kinston Indians that started on June 6, but was finished two days later. Wilmington won three games between those losses.
