LAST NIGHT'S RECAP: The Lynchburg pounded out 21 hits and scored eight runs in the fourth inning en route to a 14-1 win over the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Derrick Van Dusen (6-2) tossed a complete-game and notched his sixth straight win. Andrew Dobies (2-3) failed to make it out of the fourth inning and suffered the loss for the Blue Rocks, who have lost four in a row and 11 of their last 16. Mike McCuistion went 4-for-5 for the Hillcats. Every member of the Hillcats starting lineup had at least one RBI and one run scored on the night.
A NEW RECORD: The Hillcats 21 hits in last night's series opening victory established a new record for most hits allowed by Wilmingon's pitching staff in a nine-inning game. The previous record was 20 hits allowed to Kinston at Frawley Stadium on July 3, 1997. The Rocks staff allowed 14 runs in a game twice during the month of June. The eight runs scored in the fourth inning last night was a season-high against Wilmington pitching.
THE LAST TIME THAT HAPPENED: Lynchburg's Derrick Van Dusen tossed the Carolina League's first nine-inning complete game of the season in last night's win. It was the first nine-inning, complete-game effort since JD Martin of Kinston put together a complete-game effort against the Blue Rocks in Game Five of the 2004 Mills Cup Championship series.
THE SLIDE CONTINUES: The Blue Rocks have dropped four in a row and are 11 games below .500 with their overall record for the first time in 2005. The Rocks are 5-11 over their last 16 games.
TURN THE CALENDAR: The Blue Rocks endured their worst month of June in franchise history by going 9-16 during the month The Rocks went 6-9 at Frawley Stadium.
WHO'S HOT: Scott Youngbauer, who was not in the lineup last night, has hit safely in 11 in row. Youngbauer is 15-for-43 with four extra-base hits and 12 RBI over his first 11 games with Wilmington.
WHO'S NOT: Scott White enters tonight's game with one hit in his last 18 atbats and just five hits in his last 50 at-bats. Clint Chauncey has four hits in his last 28 at-bats.
GOING YARD WITH NO ONE ON: Jeff Ontiveros hit his team-leading ninth home run of the season last night and it was seventh with no one on base. As a team, the Blue Rocks have hit 19 solo shots, 16 home runs with one on and 9 with two runners on board.
OPPONENTS GOING YARD: The Blue Rocks pitching staff has allowed at least one home run in a game in eight straight and 16 of the last 17 games. The opposition has hit a total of 29 home runs against Wilmington pitching over the 17-game stretch.
Tonight's Probables LYN: LHP Brian Holliday (3-2, 5.14) vs. WIL: RHP Jose Vaquedano (3-2, 3.25) WHAT'S ON TAP?: The Blue Rocks look to avoid their second five-game losing streak of the season by sending Jose Vaquedano to the mound tonight versus Lynchburg. The 23-year-old went 1-1 with a 4.66 ERA in five starts during the month of June. Brian Holliday, 22, takes the ball tonight for the Hillcats, who look to win their sixth in a row. Holliday makes his 14th start of the season and his second against Wilmington this evening. The Pittsburgh Pirates selected him in the 12th round of the 2002 June Free Agent Draft.

PLAYING IN SEPTEMBER: The Hillcats captured the first-half Northern Division title and have qualified for the CL's postseason for the third time in the last four years. Lynchburg compiled a 40- 30 record during the first half.
THEY KEPT ON SCORING: The 14 runs scored by Lynchburg in the series opener last night was the most runs scored in a single game by the franchise against Wilmington, dating back to 1993. Lynchburg had scored 13 runs against Wilmington in a 13-4 win at City Stadium on July 2, 1998.
HOME & AWAY: The Hillcats are 16-19 on the road this season with a 5.62 team ERA and 29-13 at home with a 3.84 team ERA. The Hillcats snapped a five-game, losing streak on the road with last night's win.
â05 SERIES: The Hillcats have won five of the eight meetings with the Blue Rocks in 2005. Wilmington and Lynchburg split a fourgame series at Frawley in May.
ALL-TIME SERIES: The Blue Rocks hold a 146-101 advantage in the all-time series against the Lynchburg franchise, dating back to 1993. The Rocks have gone 76-50 against Lynchburg at Frawley and 70-51 in Lynchburg.
THIS DATE IN BLUE ROCKS HISTORY
July 1, 1994: A five-run eighth inning was not enough for the Rocks as Wilmington fell 9-6 at Lynchburg. Larry Sutton homered for the 17th time this season and added a two-run double. Rocks starter Dilson Torres lost his first game in eight decisions.
July 1, 1995: The Rocks pounded out 10 hits, but that was not enough, as the Blue Rocks fell to the Salem Avalanche, 6-4, at Frawley Stadium. Carlos Mendez hit the first-ever, inside-the-park homerun in Frawley Stadium history in the fourth inning. An eighth-inning, Sergio Nunez error allowed the Avalanche to score the go-ahead run. Reliever Dave Sinnes retired six batters by strikeout in the two innings he worked.
July 1, 2001: The Blue Rocks win their first extra-inning game of the season with a 5-4, 11-inning win over the Winston-Salem Warthogs at Frawley Stadium. Norris Hopper ties the game at 4-4 with an RBI-single against losing pitcher Jeff Bajenaru. Marco Cunningham drives in the winning run with a bases loaded single after Bajenaru walked Eric Nelson intentionally. Cunningham went 2-for-3 with three walks and a double on the night. Micah Mangrum went four innings in relief and ended up notching the win.
ON THE FARM WITH THE BOSTON RED SOX WEDNESDAY'S RESULTS Pawtucket (IL): The Charlotte Knights came up with their second straight walk-off win against the Paw Sox by scoring two runs in the ninth inning in a 6-5 come-from-behind win last night in Charlotte. Former Blue Rocks hurler Eduardo Villacis made the start for the Knights and took a no-decision. (Record: 41-39)
Portland (EL): The Altoona Curve blanked the Sea Dogs, 7-0, at Hadlock Field on Thursday night. John Lester suffered the loss for Portland. Chris Durbin had two of the three hits in the loss. The Sea Dogs have lost eight of their last 11. Lynchburg alum, Paul Maholm, tossed eight innings of three-hit shutout baseball and notched the win. (Record: 40-35)
Greenville (SAL): The Bombers returned to action after a three-day all-star break and picked up a 9-5 win over Ashville. John Otness went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the victory. Scott Shoemaker notched the win. (Record: 2nd 5-2, 40-35)
Lowell (NYP): The Oneonta Tigers defeated Lowell, 5-2, on Thursday at LeLacheur Park. The Spinners have lost three straight and four of their last five after winning five in a row to open the season. (Record: 6-4)
The six clubs currently playing in the Red Sox minor league system have combined for a 164-158 record (.509) in 2005.
