Pelicans Cannot Complete Comeback, Fall in Extra Innings

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans overcame a three-run deficit, but could not hold off the Wilmington Blue Rocks in a 7-6 loss in 10 innings on Sunday night at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

The Pelicans (20-37) took the lead early in the first game of the series as Luke Reynolds punched a two-run double to left center in the second to give the Birds a 2-0 lead.

Javier Assad was lights out to open the ballgame as he worked four innings of hitless baseball to start the ballgame before he ran into trouble in the fifth.

Wilmington (35-21) loaded the bases to begin the inning on a single and a pair of walks and Ricky Aracena drew a bases loaded walk to bring in the first run of the game for the Blue Rocks.

The Blue Rocks took a 3-2 lead just two batters later when Brewer Hicklen drilled a two-run single. Wilmington added on two more on a two-run double from MJ Melendez that made it a 5-2 game in favor of Wilmington.

The Pelicans stormed back in the sixth with three runs of their own to tie the game at 5-5.

After three singles loaded the bases for the Pelicans, Grant Fennell brought the Birds within a run when he knocked a two-run single that made it a 5-4 game.

Myrtle Beach (20-37) tied the game when Reynolds collected his third RBI on the night with an run-scoring single to right that made it 5-5.

The Pelicans threatened in the bottom of the ninth inning as they loaded the base with only one out in the inning, but after a groundout and a strikeout ended the frame the game headed to extras.

In the top of the tenth, Nick Pratto singled in a run that gave the Blue Rocks a 6-5 lead and they added another of on a Seuly Matias RBI single to take a 7-5 lead into the bottom of the tenth inning.

After an RBI single from Jimmy Herron brought the Pelicans within a run in the tenth, Tyler Zuber (W, 3-0) forced Carlos Sepulveda to ground out to end the ballgame.

The Birds will look to even the series with Wilmington on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. The Pelicans have yet to announce a starter for the ballgame, while RHP Jackson Kowar (4-3, 3.38) will take the hill for Wilmington.
