Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Fighting to get back into the American Association's wild card race, the Winnipeg Goldeyes put in some extra work Saturday night to help their cause.

The Goldeyes needed 12 innings to beat the Kansas City T-Bones 7-6 before.

The win moves the Goldeyes (26-34) to eight games back of the T-Bones (32-24) in the wild card race.

The Goldeyes got behind early by giving up single runs in the first and third innings, but replied in the top of the fourth when Casey Haerther's sac fly scored Adam Heisler.

An inning later, Josh Mazzola hit a two-run home run to give the Goldeyes a 3-2 lead, while the home run tied Mazzola with Terry Lee for the franchise home run record. Both sluggers have 65 home runs in a Goldeyes uniform.

After the T-Bones tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, Casio Grider singled to score Nic Jackson in the top of the seventh and Winnipeg regained a 4-3 lead.

However, the T-Bones tied the game in the bottom of the eighth off an error by Mazzola, who was trying to throw out Ryan Cavan at first base after a ground ball.

Neither team scored in the ninth inning to force extra innings.

Under the international tiebreaker rule, both teams left the go-ahead run on third base in the 11th, but the Goldeyes broke through in the 12 th.

With Brad Boyer placed on second to start the inning, Jackson beat out an infield single, but came up lame on the play and was replaced at first by Ryan Babineau. That was followed by an RBI single from Grider to score Boyer and Babineau also scored on the play thanks to a Kansas City error. Grider also moved up to third on the error and scored a batter latter on a wild pitch by T-Bones closer Fernando Hernandez. It proved to be the winning run as the T-Bones scored twice in the bottom of the inning, but came up a run short for the second consecutive night.

Heisler and Grider each had three hits for the Goldeyes, while Grider and Mazzola each had a pair of RBI.

Jailen Peguero, who threw 47 pitches and allowed just one hit, picked up the win after working a season-high 3 2/3 innings. The Goldeyes used a season-high seven pitchers in the game, who combined for nine strikeouts.

Hernandez suffered the loss for the T-Bones.

The series finale goes Sunday afternoon at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City. The Goldeyes will send Kyle Anderson (1-5, 6.55) to the hill against Kansas City's Bobby Doran (8-1, 4.11). Game time is 1 p.m. and all the action can be heard on Jewel 100.5 FM with Steve Schuster calling the play-by-play.

The Goldeyes have Monday and Tuesday off before hosting the Amarillo ThunderHeads at Shaw Park on Wednesday to begin a three-game series and six-game homestand.

Tickets for all Goldeyes home games in 2015 are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on goldeyes.com, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
