Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
AMARILLO, Texas - Numerous injuries have plagued the Canaries, but that didn't stop them from picking up a win on Saturday evening. Sioux Falls had three newcomers playing the field after Jake Luce suffered a concussion on Friday night. Relief pitcher Mike Watt saw action as a designated hitter on Saturday as the Birds' picked up a 10-6 victory over the Amarillo Thunderheads at Potter County Memorial Stadium.
Sioux Falls put the first couple runs on the scoreboard in the top of third after newcomer Brett Balkin led things off with a triple. Watt stepped up to the plate for his first ever professional at-bat, hitting a ground-out that allowed Balkin to score from third. RJ Perucki finished things off in the top half of the inning after hitting an RBI single. Amarillo answered with two runs of their own when Dexter Kjerstad picked up an RBI single. Later in the inning, Rene Leveret hit a sacrifice-fly, scoring Kjerstad for the final run of the inning.
In the top of the fourth, Canaries back-up catcher Steve Sulcoski hit a two-run homerun, his first in a Sioux Falls uniform. Heading into the bottom of the fifth, Amarillo cut the Birds' lead to one after Rene Leveret punched an RBI single into right field.
Amarillo tied the game up at four apiece when Logan Vick hit a laser for an RBI triple. Sioux Falls came storming back in the top of the seventh after Tyler Shover hit a two RBI double to push the Birds' lead back to three. The final run for the Birds' came in the top of the eighth inning when Brian Humphries hit an RBI single that allowed Chris Grayson to score from third.
The Canaries added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth after relief pitcher turned designated hitter Mike Watt laced an RBI single into left field. Jerome Pena answered with an RBI single of his own for the final run for Sioux Falls.
In all, Sioux Falls scored ten runs on eighteen hits. Brian Humphries paced the Canaries offense going 3-for-5 with one RBI.
Sioux Falls starting pitcher Miguel Pena (6-5, 2.74 ERA) picked up his team leading sixth win for the Canaries after tossing six innings on eleven hits, giving up four earned runs.
The Canaries will go for win three on Sunday afternoon as they send Stephen Bougher (2-2, 4.53 ERA) to the mound in search of his third win in a Sioux Falls uniform. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM for game four of the four game series.
