RailCats Get Big Walk-Off Win When It's Needed Most

Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Gary, Ind. - Called on to pinch hit the ninth inning of a 4-4 tie, with a runner in scoring position, Jaime Del Valle came through, chopping a bounding ball to short to win the game, and end the Gary SouthShore RailCats four-game skid with a 5-4 walk-off win over the Sioux City Explorers Saturday.

Sioux City (42-18) jumped on the RailCats early with two runs in the first inning before Gary SouthShore (28-32) made it 2-1 with a Roger Bernal sacrifice fly in the second.

The RailCats and starting pitcher Travis McGee seemed to be out of the third inning trailing by that score, but the umpires met and overturned an original call of a Noah Perio groundout, ruling it foul instead. The X's put two more runs on the board in the inning, chasing McGee from the game after throwing only 2.2 innings.

The 'Cats made it a one-run game again in the fourth after Brandon Thomas blasted a triple to right field but couldn't get the tying run home.

In the fifth, the tying run did score on a Jose Sermo two-out double to left.

That's where the score would stay until Martinez, who led off the inning with a single, was sacrificed to second and reached third on a wild pitch, scored on the Del Valle fielder's choice game-winner.

The RailCats had their first ejection of the year when manager Greg Tagert was tossed by home plate umpire Matt Herrera at the conclusion of the sixth inning for arguing that a diving catch in centerfield that ended the inning was a trapped ball instead of a clean catch.

With the team having dropped five games below .500 prior with Friday night's loss, the RailCats snapped their losing streak with one more left to play vs. Sioux City at home this season.

First pitch tomorrow is at 2:10 p.m. as the X's Patrick Johnson (8-0) goes toe-to-toe with Charle Rosario (9-4) for the 'Cats in a matchup of aces.
