Two out Third Inning Rally Does All the Damage in 5-0 Loss
July 25, 2015 - American Association (AA)
Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS - Omar Bencomo had not received a loss in any of his first 11 starts during the 2015 season. After one tough inning in the Wichita Wingnuts 5-0 loss in Laredo on Saturday night, that was no longer the case. The Lemurs scored five runs with two outs in the bottom of the third inning to take their first game in the series and hand Bencomo his first loss of the year.
Both teams struggled to put runners on the base through the first two innings of the contest against the respective starting pitchers. After Bencomo (5-1) struck out the first batter of the third frame, Jarred Mederos knocked a base hit to left. Ty Morrison popped out on the left side of the infield for the second out before the bats heated up for the Lemurs (33-28) in a hurry. D'Vontrey Richardson smacked a double down the left field line to open the scoring. Kevin Taylor worked a walk in the ensuing at-bat before a trio of doubles did the rest of the damage. Denis Phipps, Dustin Geiger, and Juan Silverio each came up with a two-base hit of their own to extend the lead to 5-0.
Bencomo never allowed another run in the contest but the damage had already been done. He ended up lasting 6.0 innings and surrendered eight hits while striking out five. On the other side of the ledger, the Wingnuts (37-24) could never cash in against Laredo starter Luis Pollorena (5-1). The 5'8 southpaw held the Wingnuts off the board for 6.2 innings before departing with the bases loaded in the seventh. He allowed only five hits which was the same number of strikeouts he recorded. Wichita left the bases loaded in the sixth and seventh innings as closer John Brebbia got Jayce Ray to line out to center field to end the latter. Brebbia picked up the save after working the final 2.1 innings.
David Espinosa and Harrison Kain were the only Wingnuts with multiple hits in the battle. Alex Boshers was stellar in two scoreless innings out of the bullpen to lower his ERA to 0.98.
The series finale will feature a showdown between RHP Jon Link (4-0) of the Wingnuts and Laredo RHP Greg Holle (3-5). First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m. For information on season tickets, group outings, and party packages, call the Wingnuts' main office at (316) 264-NUTS, or visit the Wingnuts' official website at www.wichitawingnuts.com.
