Kitchener Rangers News Release
Brent Pedersen scored the game winning goal with less than two minutes to play, lifting the Kitchener Rangers to a 2-1 victory over the Winsdor Spitfires on Friday night. Mike Davies also scored a goal, his sixth of the year, while netminder Dawson Carty improved his season record to 6-0-1-2.
Both netminders were perfect through the opening 20 minutes, with Rangers starter Dawson Carty making eight saves and Brendan Johnston stopping all 15 Kitchener shots he faced.
The Rangers broke the scoreless deadlock near the midway point of the game. Frank Hora cleared the puck out of the Kitchener zone and Mike Davies picked it up near centre ice. The sophomore winger raced towards the Spitfires net, lifting a wrist shot over a sprawling defender and past the glove of Johnston. The goal was the sixth of the year for Kitchener's 2013 first round pick.
Windsor responded with two minutes left in the frame, capitalizing on a lengthy 5-on-3 power play opportunity. Team scoring leader Trevor Murphy picked up a pass from new Spitfire Hayden McCool and snapped a quick shot glove-side past Carty. Sam Povorozniouk also assisted on the play.
Kitchener led shots on goal 13-12 in the second period.
Brent Pedersen notched the game winner for the Rangers with 1:43 left to play. The veteran forward pushed in from the wing, chipping a sharp angle shot into the top corner of the net for his eighth of the season and third goal in as many games. Helpers on the play were credited to defencemen Doug Blaisdell and Liam Maaskant.
The Rangers out-shot the Spitfires 12-11 in the third period, finishing with a 40-31 overall advantage. Carty made 30 saves to pick up his sixth win of the season.
With the victory, Kitchener improves to 12-3-2-4 and extend their point streak to a 16th straight game.
