Nothing Lasts Forever: 67's Home Win Streak Ends in Loss to Greyhounds

Ottawa 67's News Release

The Ottawa 67's made it to overtime against the high-flying Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, but eventually fell 4-3 Friday night at TD Place to break an impressive home winning streak.

The 67's began the year with six consecutive victories on home ice and nearly had a seventh if not for a tying goal by the Greyhounds in the final period of regulation and an overtime marker by Darnell Nurse in the last minute.

"We got a point against a really good team. Let's look at it that way," said 67's coach Jeff Brown, whose team's six-game win streak at home to begin a season equalled the torrid start of the 1977-78 version of the Barber Poles.

Another win would have given this year's version of Ottawa's major junior heroes the second-best home winning streak start in franchise history, and would have set up the squad with a shot at tying the team's all-time best of nine straight wins at home (by the 1976-77 team) to begin a year.

It wasn't meant to be.

Travis Konecny provided the 67's with a goal advantage early in the third on a howitzer from the left side that beat Greyhounds goalie Brandon Halverson.

But the Soo achieved the equalizer five minutes later, as Gabe Guertler managed to get the puck behind Ottawa goalie Liam Herbst who played a strong game for the 67's, making 34 saves.

The 67's had one good scoring opportunity in overtime, which the Greyhounds thwarted. On the counter, Sergey Tolchinsky dropped a pass to the trailing Nurse who leaned into the puck and ripped it behind Herbst for the winner, sending most of the 4,742 fans home entertained, but crestfallen that the home team lost.

Dante Salituro scored his 15th goal of the season and rookie Trent Mallette also counted for Ottawa.

The 67's will immediately try to get back on the winning track at home on Saturday afternoon at 2 against the Kingston Frontenacs at TD Place. On Monday, Ottawa hosts the Barrie Colts at 10:30 a.m. at Canadian Tire Centre in the annual School Day Game.
