Saginaw Spirit Kick off Long Weekend with Win over Niagara
November 21, 2014 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Saginaw Spirit News Release
The Saginaw Spirit took the ice against the Niagara IceDogs for some Friday night OHL hockey at the Dow Event Center, taking a 2-1 victory over the IceDogs. Before puck drop the Saginaw Spirit recognized Jacob Ringuette and Nick Moutrey for their 200th game played in the Ontario Hockey League.
The first period saw the Saginaw Spirit and Niagara IceDogs in a deadlock, with both teams fighting hard to open the game's scoring. Though the period was goalless, it's not to say that it wasn't entertaining. The Saginaw Spirit put 14 shots on Niagara's starting goaltender Brandon Hope but could not find the back of the net due to Hope's superb goaltending. The IceDogs saw plenty of scoring opportunities against the Spirit's starting goaltender Jake Paterson but Saginaw's defensive pressure held off Niagara
Niagara finally broke the game's deadlock when they netted the first goal towards the later end of the second. Niagara's Aaron Haydon snagged a goal from the blue line at the 15:05 mark, with the help of Vince Dunn and Anthony DiFruscia, making it a 1-0 game. The Spirit outshot the IceDogs 16-12 in the second period.
The Saginaw Spirit tied the game at 5:28 of the third period after Artem Artemov set up a nice pass for Dylan Sadowy to go up 1-1. Mitchell Stephens was also credited with an assist on the play. The Spirit came back with some timely scoring late in the third period after captain Nick Moutrey picked up a pretty pass from Tye Felhaber and jumped the Spirit to a final score of 2-1 over the IceDogs at 18:27 of the period. The Saginaw Spirit left the Dow Event Center outshooting the Niagara IceDogs 39-37.
The Saginaw Spirit will take on the Erie Otters on Saturday, November 22nd at the Dow Event Center for the Spirit's second home game of the weekend and the 8th Annual Guns and Hoses Classic at 4:30. Puck is scheduled to drop for the Spirit Game at 7:35 p.m. The boys will travel to the RBC Centre on Sunday, November 23rd to face the Sarnia Sting. Game time is set for 4:05 p.m. on Sunday.
