PawSox Score Final 11 Runs in Blowout Victory

Brent Dlugach had been mired in a slump entering Saturday's game but it was his second-inning homerun that gave Pawtucket a lead from which they never looked back.

After Buffalo scored a run on a pair of first-inning doubles, Pawtucket would score the final 11 runs of the ballgame, including scoring seven times in the eighth, to win by a final of 11-1.

Dlugach had appeared in just seven of Pawtucket's previous 17 games entering Saturday, and over that time frame he was 3-for-24 (.125) with 12 strikeouts. Dlugach tacked on a single in the eighth inning for good measure to finish 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

Lars Anderson put the final nail in Buffalo's coffin on Saturday evening with a grand slam, and those of the 8,849 in attendance who remained at McCoy Stadium knew it at soon as the ball left his bat. Anderson jolted a Gustavo Chacin pitch halfway up the bleachers in right-center to cap Pawtucket's seven-run eighth inning.

Buffalo

elected to walk Ryan Lavarnway to load the bases so the lefty Chacin could try his luck against the lefty Anderson, but Anderson's 13th homer - and second grand slam- of the season turned the tables on Tim Teufel's micromanaging. Anderson's other grand slam came July 16 against the Durham Bulls. Saturday's slam was the fifth of the season for Pawtucket, and three of the five have come against the Buffalo Bisons.

Jed Lowrie appears ready for the major leagues after another impressive performance Saturday night. Lowrie played in his first full game for Pawtucket and finished 3-for-5 with three doubles, two RBI and a run scored.

Tony Pena Jr. arguably had his finest performance as a starting pitcher Saturday night. He matched his season-high in inning pitched with seven which he had done twice previously. He allowed just one run on six hits and a walk while throwing an economical 85 pitches. His start marked the first time in a month that he allowed fewer than two runs in a ballgame.

Ronald Bermudez started the offense in the bottom of the eighth inning with a two-RBI double. He sent a 2-2 pitch on a line to the wall in right-centerfield and with the runners off on the pitch from first and second, they were both able to score easily to begin the offensive onslaught in the eighth.

The PawSox will host the Buffalo Bisons for the final game of their four-game series Sunday afternoon with the first pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m. Pawtucket's starting pitcher is Kyle Weiland (8-7, 3.20 ERA) and he will be opposed by Buffalo's Chris Schwinden (7-5, 3.59 ERA). In his last start Monday Weiland went seven innings and allowed three runs in a no-decision against the Louisville Bats. Sunday's game will be PawSox Ladies' T-Shirt Day where the first 3,000 female fans entering McCoy Stadium will receive a PawSox T-Shirt courtesy of CVS Pharmacy and ABC-6.
