Walkoff Walk Dooms Chiefs in Columbus

August 6, 2011 - International League (IL1)
Syracuse Mets News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, dropped another close decision on Saturday night in a - 5-4 walkoff loss to the Columbus Clippers.

The Chiefs took a 3-0 lead early, before Columbus back to score four consecutive runs.

Corey Brown then homered in the ninth inning to tie the score, but Atahualpa Severino walked Beau Mills with the bases loaded to end the game.

Syracuse (49-63) put Clippers starter Jeanmar Gomez on the ropes in the fourth inning and burst through for a pair of runs.

After two quick outs, the Chiefs loaded the bases on a Matt Antonelli walk, Seth Bynum single, and Jhonatan Solano walk.

Jeff Frazier then lined a two-run single to left field on a 3-1 pitch, putting Syracuse ahead 2-0.

Brown then followed with an RBI infield single to second base before Gomez finally ended the inning.

It didn't take long for Columbus (72-42) to answer.

In the bottom of the fourth, Nick Johnson doubled in Jerad Head with one out for the Clippers' first run.

Two batters later, Mills singled to center field, cutting the lead to 3-2.

Jeff Mandel relieved Brad Meyers in the sixth inning and was rudely greeted by Head.

The outfielder launched Mandel's second pitch well over the left-center field wall for a game-tying solo home run.

The Clippers would load the bases with one out, but Mandel induced two groundouts to escape the inning in a 3-3 tie.

Columbus broke the tie game in the eighth inning.

Jared Goedert and Mills worked walks against Lee Hyde to begin the frame.

After Luke Carlin sacrificed the runners to second and third, Severino came in to relieve Hyde.

Tim Fedroff then bounced a ball back to Severino, who tossed home for the out.

But Cord Phelps singled to left field to give the Clippers their first lead of the game.

Syracuse's comeback hopes seemed dash when Josh Judy came on in the ninth and retired pinch-hitter Tug Hulett for the first out.

But Brown stepped up and slammed a 1-2 fastball to right field, tying the game at 4.

The home run was Brown's team-leading thirteenth and second in two days.

But the Clippers would rally without a hit in the ninth.

With one out, Chad Huffman worked a full-count walk against Severino.

Johnson then hit a tailor-made double-play ground ball to shortstop, but the ball went through Seth Bynum's legs for a fielding error, and Huffman went to third on the play.

After an intentional walk to Goedert, Mills fouled off a number of 3-2 pitches before drawing ball four on a high fastball against Severino.

Huffman scored the game-winning run as Columbus earned its third straight win of the series.

Syracuse and Columbus finish their four-game series Sunday afternoon at 5:05.

Right-hander Brad Peacock will deal for the Chiefs against Columbus righty Zach McAllister.
