Chiefs' comeback falls short in Columbus
August 6, 2011 - International League (IL1)
Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, fell victim to a barrage of extra-base hits by the Columbus Clippers on Friday night in a 7-5 loss. The Clippers collected four doubles and three home runs in the win. Syracuse scored five straight runs late, but fell short for the second straight time at Columbus.
Columbus (71-42) scored runs in each of the first four innings. The Clippers' first came when Tim Fedroff doubled to lead off the game and scored three batters later on a Jerad Head groundout. The double was the first of six extra-base hits allowed by Syracuse (49-62) starter Craig Stammen.
In the second inning, the Clippers homered on back-to-back pitches. Nick Johnson hit his sixth home run on Stammen's third pitch of the inning with a fly ball to deep right field. Jared Goedert then homered to left-center field on the next pitch, his seventh of the season. Columbus added a third-inning home run when Head smacked one to center field for his twentieth long ball, putting the Clippers ahead 4-0.
Columbus scored three runs in the fourth inning thanks to a pair of run-scoring doubles. Goedert and Beau Mills singled to start the inning, before Luke Carlin doubled in Goedert to chase Stammen from the game. With one out, Cord Phelps doubled in both runners against reliever J.D. Martin, giving Columbus a 7-0 lead.
Syracuse finally got on the board in the fifth inning. With one out, Corey Brown smacked a 3-1 pitch from starter Corey Kluber over the right field wall. The home run was Brown's team-leading twelfth of the season. Following Brown's blast, Steve Lombardozzi tripled and Roger Bernadina walked. Chris Marrero then knocked in the Chiefs' second run with an RBI single to center field.
In his next at-bat, Marrero ignited a Syracuse rally in the eighth inning. After Bernadina drew a leadoff walk against right-hander Matt Langwell, Marrero lined a 2-0 pitch the opposite way for a two-run home run to right field. After a Jesus Valdez single and two outs, Jhonatan Solano just missed a home run to right field, but settled for an RBI double to make it 7-5. However, lefty reliever Nick Hagadone came in to strike out Jeff Frazier and end the rally. Hagadone would then retire the side in the ninth inning to earn the save.
The Chiefs and Clippers play the third of their four game-set Saturday night at 7:05. Syracuse righty Brad Meyers will take the hill against Clippers right-hander Jeanmar Gomez.
