The Pawtucket Red Sox scored single runs in the first through fourth innings on Wednesday afternoon in Indianapolis, and hung on for the 4-2 win. The teams played under extreme conditions, with temperatures that reached 98 degrees. In the first, Ryan Kalish smacked a leadoff double, stole third base and scored on a single by Jose Iglesias. In the second, a pair of Indians errors lead to the second run. In the third, Andy LaRoche doubled and came home on a sacrifice fly by Scott Podsednik. In the fourth, Nate Spears capped the scoring with a booming home run over the right field fence. It was his eighth homer of the season. Indy scored both its' runs in the sixth.
Veteran righthander Nelson Figueroa was a success in his Pawtucket debut. Figueroa worked into the sixth inning, surendering 2 runs on 5 hits. He earned the win. Alex Wilson, Clay Mortensen and another newcomer, Jose De La Torre cleaned up from the bullpen. De La Torre earned the save.
The win could prove to be costly for Pawtucket. Catcher Mike Rivera left the game in the third after being hit on the hand by a pitch. In the ninth, J.C. Linares was also hit by a pitch. He remained in the game.
The PawSox and Indians resume the series on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Tony Pena is scheduled to pitch.
