Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release

Fort Mill, SC - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (58-47) entered play on Wednesday having made the fewest errors of any of the International League's 14 teams. The normally sure handed and sure armed Yankees committed two errors in the game including a throwing error in the bottom of the 11th inning that gave the Charlotte Knights the winning run in a 4-3 loss at Knights Stadium.

The Yankees picked up the first run of the night in the top half of the first inning off Knights starter Dylan Axelrod. With two out and no one on Eduardo Nunez, added to the SWB roster earlier in the day worked a walk and during the at bat to Jack Cust stole second base to move into scoring position. Cust singled to right field and Nunez slide home just ahead of Conor Jackson's throw from right field and the Yankees led 1-0.

Axelrod was gone after five innings of work, finishing his first start for the Knights after getting optioned back from the Chicago White Sox. Right hander Jhan Carlos Marinez entered the game for Charlotte to start the sixth inning and surrendered a homer to the first battered he faced, Corban Joseph. Joseph's seventh of the season gave the Yankees a 2-0 lead.

SWB starter John Maine struck out a season high eight Charlotte hitters on the night in picking up the no decision. The Yankees right hander who makes his off season home in the Charlotte area had a large contingent seated behind the Yankees dugout cheering with every strikeout. The Knights picked up two runs in the sixth off Maine who allowed a leadoff double to Tyler Kuhn. Kuhn was bunted up to third by Drew Garcia and Dan Johnson's sac fly made it 2-1. With two out and a 2-2 count, Jackson hit a homer down the line in left to tie the game at two all.

Charlotte grabbed the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning picking up the third and final run allowed by Maine. The last batter that the Yankees starter faced was Josh Phegley who singled to open the inning. Cory Wade came into the game out of the pen and allowed a double to Jared Mitchell to put runners at second and third with none out. With one down and the infield in Ray Olmedo's slowly chopped grounder was hit to softly for Joseph to have a play at the plate and the go ahead run score giving the Knights a 3-2 lead.

The Yankees were down to their final out in the top of the ninth inning with Laird at second as the tying run. Laird picked up a leadoff single against Donnie Veal and moved to second base on a Kosuke Fukudome ground out. With two out Cole Garner's grounder to short was thrown away by Garcia over the head of the first baseman Hector Giminez and the game was tied at 3-3.

The Knights would pick up the winner in the bottom of the 11th in similar fashion. Jackson who had four hits off SWB pitching on the night led off the inning with a double to left center field and with one out Phegley's chopper to third was thrown away by Doug Bernier and the winning run scored off Yankees reliever Ryota Igarashi (LP, 2-3) who entered the game in the 11th following the 4.0 scoreless from Wade.

The Yankees and Knights play the third game of the series Thursday night at Knights Stadium with a 7:15 PM first pitch. Right hander Ramon Ortiz (8-3, 2.80) will get the start for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre while right hander Simon Castro (1-1, 2.70) is slated to make the start for the Knights.
