Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- It wasn't the Empire, but rather the Pawtucket Red Sox who struck back Saturday on Star Wars Night at McCoy Stadium.
Spotting the Syracuse Chiefs an early lead for the second straight evening, the PawSox rallied to a 5-3 victory before a season-high attendance of 10,632 at McCoy Stadium.
The win, a seventh in the last nine games, lifted Pawtucket to a season-best 12 games above .500, at 34-22. And by coming back as they did, the PawSox gave Allen Webster enough support to earn his fifth victory. Webster is now 5-0 with a 2.57 ERA
But he began Saturday by walking the second batter of the night, Anthony Rendon, on four pitches. The next hitter, Will Rhymes, lashed a line drive sinking into left center field. PawSox outfielders Jeremy Hazelbaker and Ronald Bermudez collided as they dived, resulting in an injury to the latter and 1-0 lead for the Chiefs.
Bermudez eventually walked off the field, assisted by trainer Jon Jochim.
In the fourth inning, Corey Brown, who hit 25 homers last season, belted his seventh of 2013 by lifting a towering drive to straight-away center.
Working with a 2-0 lead, Syracuse starter Ryan Tatusko retired 12 of the first 13 batters faced, issuing only walk during that span. But Brandon Snyder led off the fifth with Pawtucket's first hit, a single. Jonathan Diaz singled and Brock Holt doubled to draw the Sox within 2-1. Diaz then scored from third on Dan Butler's game-tying grounder.
An inning later, Tatusko (L, 0-2) lost Ryan Lavarnway with a 3-2 pitch for a one-out walk. With two down, Snyder and Justin Henry each singled, as Lavarnway scored the go-ahead tally on the second hit.
The PawSox put another run on the board off Tatusko after Holt led off the seventh with a single. Tatusko's errant pickoff throw moved Holt to second, preceding a ground out and an RBI single by Drew Sutton for a 4-2 lead.
Meanwhile, Webster was relieved in the seventh by Alex Wilson, making his second appearance since being optioned from Boston. Wilson issued a leadoff walk and two singles in the eighth, before Zach Waters pared the difference to 4-3 with a sacrifice fly.
Again the Sox rebutted.
Facing reliever Xavier Cedeno, Snyder delivered his third hit, a double, and eventually scored on Diaz's RBI grounder.
Pedro Beato (S, 2) overcame a leadoff single in the ninth to close out the victory.
The PawSox will bid for a third consecutive win over Syracuse at 1:05 p.m. on Sunday. Rubby De La Rosa (0-1, 3.45) is scheduled to face Matt Torra (0-1, 5.73).
