The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost to Pawtucket on Saturday, 5-3. The Chiefs had a 2-0 lead through the first five innings, but allowed at least one run in in the final four in the loss.
The game started off with a scary moment. Following a lead off walk, Will Rhymes doubled to center field to score Anthony Rendon, in his first Triple-A game, and put Syracuse (23-32) up, 1-0. However, on the play, Pawtucket (34-22) center fielder Ronald Bermudez and left fielder Jeremy Hazelbaker collided. Hazelbaker remained in the game, but Bermudez left with an injury.
After a few quick innings from starter Ryan Tatusko, Corey Brown added to the Chiefs lead in the top of the fourth. With one out, he hit a pitch over the center-field wall to give Syracuse a 2-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Tatusko cruised early. He didn't give up a hit until the fifth inning, but that's when the Red Sox rally started. Brock Holt came to the plate with runners at the corners and one out. He doubled to right field to score one and cut the deficit to 2-1. The next batter, Dan Butler, grounded out to short, scoring Jonathan Diaz from third and tying the game at two.
The Red Sox rally continued in the sixth. Pawtucket had runners on the corners and two outs for Justin Henry. He laced a single to left field that scored a run and gave the Paw Sox a 3-2 lead.
In the seventh, Pawtucket added to its lead. Holt led off with a single. Then, he made it to third on a failed pick-off and a ground out. Drew Sutton came up with two outs and hit an infield single toward second to score the run and give the Red Sox a 4-2 lead.
Syracuse, though, got a run back in the second. Rhymes walked and Chris Marrero singled to start the frame. Then, with one out, Mike Costanzo singled to load the bases. Zach Walters followed with a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Rhymes and cut the deficit to 4-3.
Pawtucket came right back. In the eighth, Brandon Snyder hit a one-out double to center field. He moved to third on a strike out and a passed ball. Then, Jonathan Diaz grounded to short and scored Snyder to put the Red Sox back up, 5-3.
These two teams have a quick turnaround. They play game three of their four-game set Sunday at 1:05. Syracuse sends right-hander Matt Torra to the mound while right-hander Rubby de la Rosa goes for Pawtucket.
