Indy Slips by Clippers in Extras

Columbus Clippers News Release

The Clippers suffered extra inning heartbreak as they fell to Indianapolis 10-9 in ten innings at Huntington Park.

Like last night, Indianapolis put a crooked number on the scoreboard in their first time batting. With the bases loaded and one out, Felix Pie drove a pitch from Carlos Carrasco into the right center field gap. It cleared the bases while Pie collected a triple on the play. Wanting to score himself, Pie raced around third. Cord Phelps' relay throw was offline to catcher Omir Santos, allowing Pie to score and stake Indy to an early 4-0 lead.

The Indians later added to their advantage with a Chase d'Arnaud RBI single in the second inning. The Clippers then went to work on a rally in the bottom half of the frame. Jeremy Hermida got it started with an RBI single to right. Indianapolis had a chance to turn a double play when Matt Carson sent a grounder up the middle. Indians shortstop John McDonald tried flipping the ball to second baseman Josh Harrison, but the throw was not on target. The misthrow allowed Cord Phelps to score all the way from second.

Juan Diaz then delivered the big hit, scorching a three run shot into the Scott's Lawn Seats. Tim Fedroff later struck with an RBI single to center and Lonnie Chisenhall bashed a two run no-doubter onto Nationwide Boulevard. In just half an inning, Columbus went from being down five to leading 8-5.

Matt Carson gave the Clippers more cushion with a solo homer in the third, but Indianapolis put together a rally of their own in the top of the fourth. Josh Harrison plated a run with an RBI double, Matt Hague drove home two with a double to right, and Jared Goedert knocked in Hague with an RBI double. It all added up to a four run frame as the Indians tied the game at 9-9.

It would stay that way through nine innings so the game went into extra frames. In the top of the tenth, Indianapolis had runners on second and third with two outs. Brett Carroll sent a grounder back up the middle. Clippers shortstop Juan Diaz got to it, but he was not able to throw to first because Columbus first baseman Chun Chen was not covering the bag. That allowed one run to score on the play, giving Indy a 10-9 advantage.

Columbus could not put together the necessary rally in the bottom half of the inning as Indianapolis took game two of the four game series. Ryan Reid (W, 6-1) took home the win for Indy. Jerry Gil (L, 5-1) suffered his first loss of the season for Columbus.

These two teams will return tomorrow for Sunday night baseball in the Arena District. Lefty T.J. House (1-3, 5.53) will get the start for Columbus. Indianapolis will opt to go with righty Charlie Morton (0-1, 4.50). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
