Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Pawtucket, RI) - The Indianapolis Indians scored three unanswered runs to overtake the Pawtucket Red Sox, 4-2, in the opener of a three-game, holiday weekend series on Friday night at McCoy Stadium.
Indianapolis starter and top prospect Tyler Glasnow (4-2) allowed two runs in six innings, while the Indians' offense was aided by five PawSox errors, their most in a game since 2009.
Pawtucket starter William Cuevas (4-2) allowed three runs, two earned, in five innings, suffering his first loss in seven starts.
Gift Ngoepe led off the game with a double against Cuevas and came around to score the first run on Adam Frazier's RBI single.
Following the opening frame, Cuevas settled in and did not allow a run in the next four innings.
The PawSox (23-25) claimed their only runs in the fourth inning. Ryan LaMarre walked and Sam Travis singled to lead off the frame. Two batters later, Bryce Brentz delivered a two-run double to the wall in left center field.
Indianapolis (24-22) reclaimed the lead in the sixth. Wily Garcia doubled to right center field to lead off the frame, narrowly beating the throw from Rusney Castillo who slid to cut off the ball in the gap.
After a Pedro Florimon walk put runners on the corners, Jacob Stallings pushed a squeeze bunt down the first base line. The first baseman Travis fielded the ball but his throw to the plate went off the glove of Sandy Leon, allowing Garcia to score the tying run.
After Roman Mendez entered the game to relieve Cuevas, Ngoepe lifted a fly ball to center field with runners on first and third. Florimon tagged from third and narrowly slid in safely as Castillo's throw to the plate went off of Leon, giving the Indians a 3-2 lead.
An error and a walk loaded the bases with one out for the Indians, but Travis snared a line drive at first base that he turned into an inning-ending double play.
Indianapolis tacked on an insurance run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning. Relievers Curtis Partch and Jorge Rondon combined to allow just one hit in the final three innings.
The PawSox will stay home to open up a three-game series with the Indianapolis Indians tomorrow evening at 6:05 p.m. Pawtucket righthander Sean O'Sullivan (2-2, 3.16) is scheduled to make the start against Indians righty Trevor Williams (0-0, 0.00). Radio coverage begins on WHJJ (920 AM) and throughout the PawSox radio network begins with PawSox Insider at 4:35 p.m.
