Rochester Red Wings News Release

Logan Darnell turned in a stellar start to lead the the Red Wings to a 5-0 win over the Charlotte Knights Friday night at Frontier Field. The win keeps the second place Wings just a half-game behind division leading Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The Wings and Knights play again Saturday night at 7:05 p.m., with a Fred Costello 40 Seasons poster giveaway and fireworks after the game. Complete promotions details below....

Darnell made his 45th career start for the Wings Friday night, tying Philip Humber for seventh place among pitchers in the Twins era (2003-present). Darnell worked around a two-out double by J. B. Shuck in a scoreless top of the first inning.

Knights righty Scott Carroll was making just his third start of the season, after making four relief appearances and spending time in the big leagues with the White Sox' bullpen. Carroll put himself into a bad spot by walking Byron Buxton and James Beresford to open the bottom of the first inning. After a groundout, Kennys Vargas delivered a sacrifice fly to score Buxton for a 1-0 Red Wings lead.

In the top half of the second inning Darnell was able to work around a one out double, escaping another potential scoring opportunity for the second consecutive inning.

The Wings were unable to extend their lead in the second and third innings but Beresford extended his hitting streak to six games with a liner into left field.

Darnell worked another perfect frame in the fifth inning, but he did it with some help from his friends. Buck Britton made an excellent running catch on the warning track in left. That was followed up by Wilfredo Tovar, who snatched a grounder to his left and threw the runner out from shallow center to end the inning.

Tovar laced a single in the bottom half of the inning into center field. He then stole second base easily on the following pitch, giving the Wings a runner in scoring position with only one out. After a pop-out, Buxton came through in the clutch with a two-out double to drive in Tovar and give Rochester a 2-0 lead. The hit also extended Buxton's hitting streak to six games.

Jorge Polanco began the bottom of the sixth with a single to right. Eddie Rosario drove him in with a double down the left field line, and then he was driven in on the next pitch thanks to another double, this time from Britton. This extended the Red Wings lead to 4-0 and chased Carroll from the game. The Knights brought in righty Chris Beck to replace Carroll. Adam Brett Walker greeted him with another double for the Wings, their third of the inning. The Walker double drove in Britton, making the score 5-0.

Carroll (0-2) finished his night pitching 5.1 innings, allowing six hits, five earned runs and two walks while also striking out four.

Darnell (5-4) got two quick outs in the top of the seventh, then allowed a single to Danny Hayes - just the fourth hit allowed by Darnell. After a passed ball let Hayes advance to second, Darnell fanned Jason Coats for the third out.

In the eighth inning, Darnell got a groundball out from Tim Anderson; Anderson went 0-for-4 on the night, ending a nine-game hit streak and four-game multi-hit streak for the highlyranked White Sox prospect.

Darnell had thrown 89 pitches when he took the mound to start the ninth inning. He got a pair of groundball outs, walked a batter, then got a pop-out to end the game. Darnell allowed just five hits and a walk, with four strikeouts. It was Darnell's second complete game shutout of the season, and the fourth of his career. He threw 108 pitches, 71 for strikes

The Red Wings out-hit the Knights 9-5, with four doubles.
