Norris Baffles Bisons in Friday Night Win

May 27, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release

The Hen house was rocking Friday night in Toledo as the promising pitching matchup along with a concert across the street at Hensville Park brought a great atmosphere to downtown. Left handed pitching prospect Daniel Norris took the hill for the Hens as he looked to continue his recent success and earn his second win of the season. Countering Norris for Buffalo was Scott Diamond who brought a 3-4 record into the ballgame.

Sweet swinging Tyler Collins got things rolling on the offensive side of the ball for Toledo in the second, as he sent a Diamond offering high and far into the Toledo sunset for his fourth home run of the year. The long ball was of the solo variety, putting Toledo up 1-0. The game would not see another runner cross home until the bottom of the fourth. Chad Huffman led off the home half with a sharp single to left, to extend his hit streak to four games. The single was followed by a well-placed double from third baseman Casey McGehee down the right field line sending Huffman across the plate to take a 2-0 lead. The RBI was McGehee's 14th of the season.

The story on the night however, was the sharp arsenal displayed on the mound by Daniel Norris. The southpaw made easy work of the Buffalo lineup early as he needed just 10 pitches to get through the 1st and 12 pitches to get through the 2nd. Norris used his versatile array of pitches to strikeout six through his first five innings of work.

Norris' sharp fifth frame sent the Hens back to the dish to hit, and they seized the opportunity off Diamond. Singles by Argenis Diaz and Wynton Bernard set the table for Toledo shortstop Dixon Machado who connected with a Diamond offering, connecting for a line drive to right. The base knock brought around another run and the Hens were in business with just one out. Anthony Gose followed the clutch hit, with an RBI single of his own, driving in Bernard and Machado on the play.

After grounding into the rarely seen 5-4-3 triple play in the 4th, Hens' backstop John Hicks bounced back in a big way in the sixth. With one on and no out, Hicks sent a Pat McCoy offering high over the fence in left field to pad the lead even further to 8-0. Hicks finished 1-4 with 2 RBI on the night.

Norris' quality start ended in the seventh as the hard throwing Angel Nesbitt was summoned from the Hen Pen. However, the southpaw exited after a tremendous start, not allowing a run over his six frames on the bump. Norris surrendered just four hits, with one walk, while racking up eight punch outs. The eight K's were the left hander's season high in a start. Lloyd McClendon's bullpen was solid once again in relief, as Angel Nesbitt, Blaine Hardy, and Preston Guilmet combined for three innings of scoreless ball, surrendering just two hits.

8 Million: The Toledo Mud Hens and Fifth Third Field saw their 8 millionth fan come through the turnstiles on Friday night prior to the Toledo victory. Carter Williams, of Toledo, was awarded with a framed commemorative portrait of beautiful Fifth Third Field, and got to throw out the first pitch as he was honored as the historic fan.

The Hens and Bisons are back at it Saturday night for game two of the series, as Thad Weber takes the ball for Toledo. First pitch is set for 7:05 pm.
