Syracuse Mets News Release

Lawrenceville, GA - The Syracuse Chiefs beat the Gwinnett Braves, 1-0, Friday night at Coolray Field. Trea Turner broke a scoreless tie in the top of the eighth inning with an RBI triple to give the Chiefs the only run they would need.

The Chiefs and Braves traded zeros through the first seven innings thanks to outstanding pitching performances. Austin Voth hurled seven shutout innings, allowing just three Braves hits with no walks and six strikeouts. On the other side, Ryan Weber and Joel De La Cruz combined to throw six shutout innings, surrendering four hits, no walks, and striking out nine Chiefs.

Syracuse (25-21) finally opened the scoring in the eighth. Scott Sizemore pinch-hit for Voth and walked to lead off the inning against new Gwinnett pitcher Matt Marksberry. Turner followed with an RBI triple, scoring Sizemore to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.

Gwinnett (24-25) managed just three baserunners for the game. Trevor Gott and Rafael Martin each threw a scoreless inning in the eighth and ninth, with Martin tallying his ninth save.

The Chiefs and Braves return to Coolray Field Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Aaron Laffey is scheduled to start for Syracuse opposite Manny Banuelos for Gwinnett.
