PawSox Blank Bisons, 2-0, in Season Opener
April 8, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
The combination of a cold, Rhode Island night and PawSox starter Henry Owens proved to be too much for the Bisons offense to heat up in game number one of the 2016 season.
Owens racked up eight strikeouts over six innings, holding the Herd bats to just one single in Pawtucket's 2-0 victory over Buffalo on Friday night. The Bisons only had three hits in the game overall, spoiling a solid outing from their starter, Drew Hutchison.
On a 44 degree, windy night in Pawtucket, the PawSox and Bisons combined to strike out 30 times. Owens set the tone for the contest by fanning the side in the top of the first inning. He held the Herd hitless until Casey Kotchman led off the fifth with a single. Four pitches later, that base runner was eliminated when Owens induced a doubleplay grounder from Matt Dominguez.
In fact, the only time the Bisons advanced a runner to second base all night was on a strikeout. Darrell Ceciliani led off the seventh with a walk that pushed Owens to his pitch limit and moved to second when Anthony Varvaro struck out Jesus Montero with a ball in the dirt.
Vavaro recovered to retire the next two batters, stranding the Bisons' lone baserunner in scoring position.
For their part, Bisons' pitchers struck out 16 PawSox batters, just two shy of their modern era team record. Hutchison fanned nine on only 83 pitches over five innings, retiring the final 11 he faced. That, however, came after a Justin Maxwell walk and an Allen Craig double to the gap in left-centerfield in the second inning for the game's first run.
Maxwell added to the Pawtucket lead in the seventh with a home run off Herd relief, Dustin Antolin.
BISONS NOTES:
Both Ben Rowen and Dustin Antolin worked out of bases loaded jams in relief. Rowen fanned two to work out of trouble in the sixth and Antolin repeated the feat in the eighth....The Bisons modern era record for strikeouts thrown is 18, accomplished in an 11-inning 11-10 win over Syracuse on August 24, 2005...With his appearance in the Bisons opener, Antolin became the first Hawaiian to play for the Bisons since pitcher Reid Santos and outfielder Bronson Sardinha in the 2008 season...With the hard-luck loss, Drew Hutchison is now 0-5 in nine career starts with the Bisons.
