Wings, Riders Split Opening Set
April 8, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release
The Red Wings and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders split their two-game season opening set Friday night in Moosic, PA. The Wings blanked the RailRiders 3-0 in the completion of Thursday's suspended game, and a late rally pushed the RailRiders to a 7-2 win in game two. With Saturday's scheduled home opener postponed, the teams will meet again in Rochester Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m. at Frontier Field.
RailRiders right-hander Chad Green made his Triple-A debut Thursday night, and struck out lead-off batter Darin Mastroianni to open the game. Jorge Polanco laced a triple to right-center, then scored on a groundout from Max Kepler to give the Wings a 1-0 lead.
Tyler Duffey got the Opening Day start for the Wings; Duffey was 1-2 in three starts against Scranton in 2015, striking out nine in two of those starts. Duffey struck out lead-off hitter Ben Gamel in the bottom of the first inning Thursday, then worked around a walk and infield hit to escape trouble.
Duffey got some help from his defense in the third inning, when shortstop Wilfredo Tovar made an outstanding play to rob Gamel of a hit with a runner on base.
The teams played through a rainy fourth inning, then with John Hicks about to bat in the top of the fifth the skies opened and the umpires called for the tarp. The umpires suspended the game 45 minutes later. When the game resumed Friday night, the Wings got five innings of two-hit relief from Brandon Kintzler (1-0), Taylor Rogers, and J.R. Graham (first save). Polanco added a second triple, and Adam Brett Walker hit his first Triple-A homer in the ninth inning off Nick Goody.
In the regularly scheduled Friday game, Buck Britton had two hits and Juan Centeno had a two-run single to give starter Pat Dean an early 2-0 lead. Dean worked 5+ innings, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out six. The RailRiders posted six runs in the sixth inning against Dean (0-1) and reliever Loek van Mil, as the Wings made five errors in the game. van Mil left the game after being struck on the leg by an Aaron Judge hit, with Dan Runzler coming in to replace van Mil.
