Pats Select Dynamic Forward Temple, Seven Others in 2022 WHL Prospects Draft

Regina, Sask. - The Regina Pats selected five forwards, two defencemen and one goaltender in Thursday's WHL Prospects Draft.

The Pats began the day with a pair of trades, first acquiring 2002-born goaltender Koen MacInnes from the Everett Silvertips in exchange for this year's sixth round pick (130th overall) and a conditional seventh round pick in 2024.

The Pats then decided to move up in the draft, trading the sixth and 54th overall selections in the 2022 draft to the Swift Current Broncos in exchange for the fifth overall pick and a 2024 fourth-round pick. With the fifth overall pick, the Pats would select forward Cole Temple.

Temple, 15, led the U15 Winnipeg AAA Hockey League in points (108), while finishing second in goals (58) and third in assists (50) this season with the Brandon Wheat Kings U15 AAA team. The 5-foot-9, 150 lb. forward from Brandon, Man. also produced 30 points (15G-15A) in just 11 playoff games, leading his team to the league championship.

Almen, 14, was second in the Saskatchewan AA Hockey League in goals (55) and third in points (92), while playing in just 31 games this season with the Outlaws. The Saskatoon, Sask. native was called up for six games with the Saskatoon Blazers U-18 AAA team this season, scoring two goals and one assist. The 5-foot-10, 163 lb. forward previously played for the Martensville Marauders.

Smith, 15, produced 55 points (19G-36A) in 31 games with the Generals this season, leading all defencemen in the Saskatchewan AA Hockey League in points. The 5-foot-11, 154 lb. Saskatoon, Sask. native was called up for three games with the Saskatoon Riverkings U-18 AA team this year and previously played for the Saskatoon Stallions.

Stinton, 15, scored 47 points (23G-24A) in 30 games this past season with R.H.A Winnipeg, ending tied for third on his team in scoring, while second in goals. The 5-foot-8. 145 lb. forward hails from Flin Flon, Man. and previously played for the Norman Wolves U-15 AAA team.

Chase, 14, spent this past season with the Airdrie Xtreme U-15 AAA team, going 14-2-0, with a 2.13 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage, with one shutout. The 5-foot-10, 144 lb. goaltender hails from Airdrie, Alta.

Laplante, 15, scored 10 points (3G-7A) in 29 games this season with the Oilers U-15 AAA team. He is a 5-foot-11 defenceman from Okotoks, Alta.

Nelson, 14, scored 68 points (36G-32A) in 31 games this season with the Prince Albert Pirates. The Prince Albert, Sask. native led his team in goals and points, while finishing 11th in league scoring. He is listed at 6-foot-1, 160 lb.

Podworny, 15, scored 22 goals and added 19 assists for 41 points in 28 games for the Okanagan Rockets U15 AAA team, before adding four points in four games (2G-2A) for the U17 Rockets at the end of the season. The Onowat, Alta. native was second on the U15 Rockets in goals and points and tied for sixth in the BCEHL U15 division in points.
