Pats Hold off Wheat Kings

November 24, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

The Brandon Wheat Kings opened the scoring on Saturday night just over a minute into the game but their hot start wouldn't prove to be enough as the Regina Pats downed Brandon 5-4 and earned the first win of the 2019-2020 season between the two WHL East Division teams.

Ben McCartney scored for Brandon 1:03 into the first frame, a nice rebound for the fans at Westoba Place after suffering a tough overtime loss less than 24 hours prior against the visiting Calgary Hitmen. The lead was short lived though as the Pat's Riley Krane evened the score at the 8:59 mark and sent both teams into intermission tied 1-1.

Linden McCallum put Brandon ahead once again 9 minutes into the second period but less than two minutes later Carter Chorney tied it up for the Pats.

The mood shifted significantly in the second period as ten total penalties got handed out between the two teams, five of them coming at the very end of the second period when a scrum took place in Regina's end after the final whistle. The Pats took advantage of the ensuing power play at the start of the third when Carson Denomie scored on a wide open back door pass just 30 seconds in to put the Pats ahead 3-2. That lead was then extended by Regina's Robbie Holmes less than 4 minutes into the period, forcing the Wheat Kings to play with more urgency if they were going to earn a win.

Jonny Lambos scored from a point shot to put the Wheat Kings within a goal and the home team looked poised to make a game of it. But before Brandon could get another, Kyle Walker scored what would be the eventual game winner for Regina. Brandon defenseman, Braden Schneider, scored with a minute left in the third and earned a glorious chance at a second and tying goal in the waning seconds, but instead the Pats escaped with a win on the road and Brandon lost their second game in as many nights at Westoba Place.

After the game Wheat Kings Head Coach, Dave Lowry, said he liked his team's hot start - an area the Wheat Kings have struggled with as of late - but acknowledged they've got work to do.

"We're not hard enough to play against and that's something we're going to pay a lot of attention to going into this week".

The Wheat Kings now have the week off before hosting the Winnipeg ICE on Friday. It will be the opening game of a weekend home-and-home series between the two teams.

Friday is also the annual Wawanesa Toy Drive, so fans are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy or purchase one at the game, in support of Samaritan House and the Westman Traditional Christmas Dinner. Fans that do donate will have a chance to win an autographed Wheat Kings jersey and will be entered into a league-wide draw for a trip for two to the Memorial Cup next May in Kelowna, B.C.

Tickets to Friday's game will go back on sale Monday morning at the Keystone Centre box office by calling 204-726-3555 or online at keysonecentre.com.
