Patriots Sweep Bears With 13-7 Win

Newark, NJ - The Somerset Patriots defeated the Newark Bears 13-7 to complete a three-game sweep to start the second half of the season.

Center fielder Mike Lockwood's one-out, two-run double into the left-center-field gap opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Designated hitter Josh Pressley followed with a two-run home run (9) to give the Patriots a 4-0 lead.

The Patriots added to the lead in the top of the second inning on doubles by catcher Travis Anderson and shortstop Teuris Olivares.

Newark right fielder Joe Jiannetti's two-out double into the right-field corner plated two runs in the second, left fielder Joey Gomes homered (5) in the third, and catcher John Pachot lifted a sacrifice fly to left in the fourth after shortstop Vic Gutierrez's leadoff triple.

Newark took a 7-5 lead when third baseman Corey Smith came to bat with one out in the fifth and hit a three-run home run (7) over the left-field wall.

Elliot Ayala sealed the victory in the eighth with the first pinch-hit home run (3) of his 10-year professional career, and second homer of the series.

The Patriots already had tacked an insurance run onto their lead when, with two runners on base, Ayala hit for pitcher Keith Ramsey, who one inning earlier scored the decisive run as a pinch runner.

Patriots reliever Saul Solveson (3-0) earned the victory tossing two scoreless innings, surrendering only one hit.Newark reliever Justin Huisman (1-1) took the loss after allowing two runs on two hits and two strikeouts in 1.1 innings of relief.

The Somerset Patriots 10th Anniversary Season presented by Ford will return to Commerce Bank Ballpark on Monday, July 16th for a 7:05 pm game against the Road Warriors.
